Varenna Miss has overcome the less-than-ideal track conditions after a testing day of racing at Caulfield Cup Day to claim the closing race at today’s meeting, winning the $70,000 Carlton Draught Plate (1100m).
The Tony Noonan-trained Redoute’s Choice mare made up for an awkward start and ugly run to get to the front when it mattered, the $2.10 favourite making it a win for the punters to finish the day.
Play Just For Me was keen for the early lead, moving up to set the pace from the outside.
After the field settled, Varenna Miss came in to sit in second just off the leader but was soon put under a lot of pressure losing ground.
Momentarily Netra took the lead and despite being overtaken held on to finish in the money.
A smashing run by Blake Shinn saw his mount Flying Tessie come up on the outside and three across Flying Tessie, Netra and a bolting Varenna Miss raced nose-to-nose.
In a blanket finish, the photo result showed Varenna Miss had overcome all odds to grab victory from nowhere narrowly defeating Flying Tessie ($13) and Netra ($6.50).
It was a big win for the mare that jumped awkwardly, wet wayward after the turn but was able to get going again with the pressure of Flying Tessie on her outside encouraging her to dig deep.
Lightly-raced, today was just Varenna Miss’s third career start and her record now sits at two wins and one third.
With the action of the Caulfield Cup Day now over for another year, the punters’ attention is set to turn to Moonee Valley for the 2010 Cox Plate Day this coming Saturday, October 23.
