A quality field of 13 three-year-olds are set to contest the $125,000 Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday as part of the elite racing action of Caulfield Cup Day.
The first Group status race on the card for Saturday, likely favourite in the 2010 Norman Robinson Stakes will be Peter Snowden’s in-form colt Retrieve.
Retrieve was impressive winning the Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill last month before finishing a gallant second to stablemate Erewhon in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick a fortnight ago.
Coming up trumps in the barrier draw with gate one, Retrieve will be ridden by Mark Zahra and is set to carry the top-weight of 57kg on Saturday which is a half kilo increase to what he has carried in his last two starts.
Retrieve is heading towards the Victoria Derby during the Melbourne Cup Carnival on October 30, currently the $4.20 favourite in the early Derby betting markets at [sportsbet].
Flemington-based trainer Snowden will also start Yulalona in the Norman Robinson.
Yulalona is another consistent colt coming off three straight wins including their last start victory in the Dulcify Quality Handicap drawn in barrier nine for Saturday.
The Norman Robinson Stakes betting markets at leading online bookie [sportsbet] are also sure to see plenty of money come in for fellow Victoria Derby hopefuls Rekindled Interest and Shadowofexcellence in anticipation of Saturday’s showdown.
Jim Conlan’s well-bred gelding Rekindled Interest * is drawn mid-field in barrier seven due to be ridden by Nash Rawiller for the first time.
Despite having won just one of their five race starts today over a much shorter 1000m distance, Rekindled Interest is tipped to improve in the Norman Robinson Stakes after finishing fifth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas last weekend.
Shadowofexcellence is another Redoute’s Choice colt that could cause an upset on Saturday, the Hawkes-trained runner having just their third career start after two eye-catching third place finishes most recently over 1800m at Flemington in the UCI Stakes.
Another three-year-old high up the Victoria Derby betting and running in the Norman Robinson Stakes on Saturday is the Tony Vasil-trained Redoute’s Choice colt Altius.
Altius, however, is yet to win over 1300m finishing fifth in the UCI Stakes at Flemington over 1800m last start and could be a risk for the 2000m on Saturday.
The 2010 AAMI Norman Robinson Stakes is scheduled as Race 4 at Caulfield on Saturday and is due to jump at 1:20pm (AEDST).
The feature race on the card for Saturday’s meeting is the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) to be contested by the likes of Metal Bender, Shocking and Herculian Prince.
Other highlights worth checking out the betting odds for include the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m), the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) where star mares Hot Danish and Palacio De Cristal will face off, and the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) led by C’est La Guerre.
