2017 Magic Millions Classic Dream Alive for Falconic

Untapped colt Falconic will be out to earn a spot in next month’s Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic 2017 when he lines-up in Sydney on Christmas Eve.

Trainer Gary Portelli originally picked the son of Nicconi as his number one juvenile heading towards the summer and autumn classics for two-year-olds this season.

He isn’t giving up on the dream of getting Falconic into Queensland’s lucrative $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 14 just yet, running the youngster in the first at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

“Early doors I thought he was our number one contender, for sure,” Portelli told Racenet.

“A lot has changed in the past couple of months as things do with two-year-olds but I still hold the colt in high regard.

“You only have to see what he’s done in his trials and on debut to know he’s got more ability than most.”

The Warwick Farm-based Portelli already has the early $7.50 favourite in futures betting at Ladbrokes.com.au for next year’s $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) in She Will Reign.

The undefeated Manhattan Rain filly was last seen running away with an impressive four length victory in the $500,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) in the wet at Randwick last weekend.

She’s obviously risen to the top of Portelli’s two-year-old crop, but Falconic gets his chance to join her with a Magic Millions Classic bid.

On debut the colt finished third behind Chauffeur over 1100m at Rosehill on December 10 beaten just over a half-length after acting like a “real bully” according to his trainer.

“He’d been a lovely quiet colt all the way through but then on race day he got real bully,” Portelli said.

“Out in the stalls he was raring up and trying to strike everyone. He carried on a treat.

“I was really surprised how aggressive he was at Rosehill because it’s not in his makeup.

“I actually had a similar experience with Rebel Dane at his first start but he was fine after that.

“We’ve put a stallion chain on him since his Rosehill run and he’s really reacted well to it.”

Falconic was originally accepted for the $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m) on Thursday, but was subsequently scratched due to a wide barrier.

Portelli instead runs him in a two-years-old set weights plus penalties sprint on the weekend where Koby Jennings retains the ride from a nice barrier five draw.

“Circumstances meant he raced up on the pace but I’m sure he’ll be a better horse ridden with cover and something to chase,” Portelli said.

“When they straightened up the other day he had the horse inside him covered but he wandered out to the centre of the track, then ran into Coorg.

“He didn’t know how to finish off but I think he’ll be a much better horse from the experience.”

Should he win that Falconic will head towards next month’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast, a Restricted Listed event he currently pays $21 to win.
