2016 Melbourne Cup Results: Aussies vs Internationals

More and more the ‘race that stops a nation’ is becoming a case of the local Aussie-trained or bred stayers against the international charge, but which camp will head the Melbourne Cup 2016 results on Tuesday?

Jameka

The full 24 horse field is engaged for the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) with markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for the famous Flemington Race 7 led by Hartnell.

Hartnell pays $5 in the Melbourne Cup odds and is also sitting top of the Top Aussie Markets at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.70.

The Godolphin-owned six-year-old is indeed Australian-trained by John O’Shea, but he is an imported stayer bred and originally raced in the UK.

Hartnell is in flying form this spring out to improve on his 15th behind upset winner Prince Of Penzance in last year’s Melbourne Cup finishing order.

Looking across the full Melbourne Cup 2016 field, there is officially just one Australian-bred horse taking on the overseas-bred continent – Jameka.

Ciaron Maher’s Caulfield Cup winning mare is a daughter of Myboycharlie out of Mine Game and she is at Melbourne Cup odds of $4.60 in the Top Aussie markets and $8.50 in overall Melbourne Cup betting.

Looking to complete the Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double for the first time since Ethereal (2001), Jameka also needs to set a new weight carrying record for a four-year-old mare in the ‘race that stops a nation’ with her 54.5kg.

So Can Jameka Win the Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup 2016 Double?

The other best fancied of the Australian-trained horses is Almandin in barrier 17 for Kerrin McEvoy.

McEvoy is one of only five Melbourne Cup jockeys in this year’s race with previous winning form in the classic having won aboard Brew (2000) 16 years ago.

Almandin is prepared by Robert Hickmott for Team Williams – headed by four-time Melbourne Cup winning owner Lloyd Williams.

The Monsun seven-year-old is looking to be the first of his age since Makybe Diva (2005) for her third Melbourne Cup win and comes off a win in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2500m) from October 2.

Of the internationally-trained raiders, two are under double-figures to win with last Saturday’s Lexus Stakes winner Oceanographer ($8) looking to complete a double last achieved by Shocking (2009) and Bondi Beach ($9.50).

Bondi Beach represents Ireland’s Aidan O’Brien and is out to improve on his 16th in the race last season.

Check out the full list of international Melbourne Cup runners below – out to be the first Northern Hemisphere-trained winner since Germany’s Protectionist (2014) – before heading to Ladbrokes.com.au to place your Melbourne Cup bets 2016!
