A typical front running display of speed saw Redzel out sprint his rivals in the Group 3 $150,000 The Resimax Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield today.
The Peter and Paul Snowden trained Redzel quickly overcame the outside barrier in the twelve horse field when jockey Mark Zahra allowed him to use his tremendous gate speed to cross the field to lead comfortably in the first 300m.
Zahra gave Redzel a slight breather coming to the home turn but released the brakes when heads were turned for home to set up a winning break.
After leading by three lengths in the early stages of the straight, Redzel ($5.50) was able to hang on to win by a neck from the fast finishing Under The Louvre ($3.70 favourite) with third placegetters Santa Ana Lane ($11) also doing his best work at the finish.
Redzel was having his first run for five weeks after winning the $85,000 July Sprint (1100m) at Canterbury on July 23 and Peter Snowden said that the Snitzel four year old performr best with his races spaced.
Snowden said that Redzel would now head back to Sydney with his next trip to the races not for another month.
“He will go back to Sydney and will not probably run for a month. There are some good sprints coming up,” Snowden said.
“It’s pleasing to see him win like he did.”
“He is a very genuine horse. This was a race we identified straight after his last race actually.”
“The way he races it takes a fair bit out of the horse so he has his races spaced.”
“He is very genuine now and we have the key to him now and he just keeps winning.”
Runner up Under The Louvre was having his first run since winning the Group 1 $1.5m AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11 and showed that he come back in fine style with an eye catching run.
