Ryan Declares Time For War in JJ Atkins 2014

Sydney’s Gerald Ryan is looking forward to Saturday’s 2014 JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm Racecourse where his runner Time For War will be after another upset win over Brazen Beau.

The Snitzel colt got the better of the Chris Waller-trained favourite last start when Time For War, ridden by Tye Angland who retains the ride for Saturday, finished a quarter length in front of Brazen Beau in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m).

That performance was a much improved effort from Ryan’s two-year-old after Time For War was beaten nearly eight lengths when 10th behind Brazen Beau the run before in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m).

Now the pair faces off for Round 3 in the $500,000 Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) up over the mile on Stradbroke Handicap Day.

Despite having been defeated in the Sires’ Produce, I Am Invincible colt Brazen Beau has retained favouritsim in the JJ Atkins odds.

They pay $2.20 in the pre-field markets ahead of the release of the final field on Wednesday.

Time For War meanwhile occupies the fifth line of JJ Atkins betting at a quote of $9, equal with the John O’Shea-trained Careless coming via a Sires’ Produce fifth.

Ryan has already enjoyed one Group 1 juvenile win this season with his Myboycharlie filly Peggy Jean taking out the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) back in April.

The three other two-year-old features of the term have then all been one by individual trainers with: Peter Snowden winning the Blue Diamond Stakes with Earthquake, Team Hawkes taking out the Golden Slipper with Mossfun and Leon MacDonald coming over from Adelaide to win the Champagne Stakes with Go Indy Go.

If successful with Time For War on Saturday then Ryan will become the only trainer with more than one two-year-olds’ Group 1 trophy for the season.

While confident the horse is going well, Ryan knows that going up to the mile at just their sixth career start could be their undoing.

“We will give him a try at the 1600 metres,” Ryan said.

“It might be too soon for him but he has done well since the Sires so he goes to the Group 1.”

Following Brazen Beau in the JJ Atkins markets meanwhile at $4.50 is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Almalad who goes up in class for this.

The Al Maher gelding has had just the two runs to date for two wins but is yet to see a Black Type field or further than 1200m.

Still Waterhouse is confident the bookies have it right and her runner will be right in it on Saturday.

“He is a very exciting horse,” Waterhouse said.

“The step up to 1600 metres will not be a problem.”

Almalad will be ridden by Tommy Berry who comes over from Hong Kong for Stradbroke Day where he also rides Rebel Dane in the $1.36 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).
