2011 Melbourne Cup – Drunken Sailor asking for more

Perhaps it took time for the Drunken Sailor to sober up but the best win of his career came as a seven-year-old just three starts back at Goodwood.

In Australia for a second time, Drunken Sailor missed the 2010 Melbourne Cup when balloted out – at the time he still raced twice and didn’t perform that well.

Those at Luxbet have long memories and have Drunken Sailor a $41 shot to win the Group 1 $6 2011 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

2011 Melbourne Cup – horse profile

#4 Drunken Sailor (barrier 8) 54kg

  • Seven year old bay gelding
  • Record: 41 starts 11 wins 9 second 4 third
  • Winning distance range 1408m to 3219m
  • Best win: 2011 Group 3 Glorious Stakes (2414m) Goodwood, England
  • Trainer: Luca Cumani, Newmarket, England.
  • Jockey, Dwayne Dunn.
  • Latest price Luxbet $41.

Owned by Australian interests the gelding has had a decent year for his astute trainer Luca Cumani winning a Listed race at Newbury in England in May.

Drunken Sailor has his god points. He sticks around longer than the mother in law and handles wet and dry tracks.

When he won at Goodwood he snuck up along the rails late and defeated Jukebox Jury Luxbet Melbourne Cup price $12, who finished third.

On weights from that race Drunken Sailor is three kilograms better off than Jukebox Jury for beating him.

Drunken Sailor has had one run in Australia this spring and that was in the 2011 Caulfield Cup.

His run was given a pass mark – Drunken Sailor settled midfield and was one of the few to make decent ground in the straight without ever looking like the winner.

He finished seventh beaten a tad over four lengths but can he improve that little bit to get over the line in a Melbourne Cup.?

After 41 starts the best he has achieved is a Group 3 victory and now he is trying to win Autstralia’s greatest race.

It looks tough but what do we do with this Drunken Sailor.

Perhaps add him in the exotics bets quinellas, trifectas and first fours and hope his value will boost the dividends.

This Flemington Spring Carnival you can get not only the best tote price on all exotics (Exacta, Quinella, Trifecta, First 4, Quaddie) but Luxbet will even give you an extra 5% on top of that for the Melbourne Cup and all Group 1 races until November 5. Nice one Luxbet.
