The Joe Pride trained Lady’s Angel will not be a starter in the Stradbroke Handicap.

Pride has made the decision to keep the horse in Sydney and enter her in the June Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

Lady’s Angel is listed as first emergency for the Stradbroke, but Pride has made the decision to leave the mare in Sydney, preferring not to run the risk of leaving the daughter of Victorian Derby winner Arena without a run.

Pride said the step back to 1100m would not be a concern for Lady’s Angel, despite the fact she was being prepared for the 1400m Stradbroke.

“I don’t believe, with most horses, that you need to specifically tune up their work for this race or that. Horses are either adept at a distance or they’re not,” Pride said.

“It’s a big class drop too which is important. The June Stakes is a listed race over 1100m and the Stradbroke is a Group One event over 1400m.

“If she was dropping from a listed 1400m race to a Group One over 1100m it might be different.”

Pride also said that Lady’s Angel would be advantaged if she ran into a wet track on the weekend. While he didn’t go so far as to concede defeat on a good track, he said her chances would be greatly improved on a rain affected surface.

Lady’s Angel has started on rain affected going four times, for three wins and a second.

Pride said that The June Stakes was a good fit for his mare and that he decided to abandoned plans to run in the 1400m Lactate Pro Handicap at Randwick because he thought she would receive too much weight.

Lady’s Angel’s long term winter goal has been the Group One Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm and Pride confirmed she remains on track for a start in the race.

Pride will also have Electric Dreams in the Fairfax Community Newspapers Handicap over 1100m at Randwick on Saturday.

The four year old Redoute’s Choice mare finished fourth behind Love Conquers All and Hay List in last year’s June Stakes, and was beaten only two lengths by More Joyous in the listed Sheraco Stakes. However since then she has failed to find any consistency.

“She is unreliable but she’s brilliant on her day,” said Pride.

“She can really produce a run but there is a big difference between her good and her bad and nothing in between.”

Punters believe that Electric Dreams is due to produce one of her better performances as she is a $4.20 favourite for the Fairfax Newspapers Handicap. Lady’s Angel, who will be ridden by Christian Reith, is currently listed as a $4.60 chance in the June Stakes.
