Crystal Mile 2022 Results: My Oberon Wins First-Up In Australia
The class rose to the top in the Crystal Mile 2022 results with Annabel Neasham’s exciting import My Oberon winning first-up down under on way to the Group 1 $3 million Champions Stakes (2000m) in a fortnight.

Having his first run since a third in Ascot’s Group 2 Summer Mile (1603m) in the UK back in early July, the former William Haggas-trained gelding was brilliant fresh on the Aussie turf.
Given a peach of a ride by last year’s winning hoop and now three-time Crystal Mile winning jockey John Allen, the Dubawi six-year-old sat off the pace before hitting the lead to tackle the front-running Buffalo River at the of the straight.
The predicted pace was on as Buffalo River got out to a three-length lead throughout, but My Oberon came for him as they cornered and pulled away heading for home.
On the line the European expat, who had sat three wide with no cover throughout, had one and three-quarters of a length to spare over the Michael Moroney-trained Bankers Choice who was the best of the rest coming from the back.
Holding for third to round out the Crystal Mile 2022 trifecta on Cox Plate Day was the pacemaker, the fellow Moroney-trained Buffalo River.
Neasham was thrilled with the Australian debut of My Oberon, sixth at 40/1 in the lucrative Dubai Turf (1800m) back in March, who she had tipped to be a little underdone.
“That was super,” she told Racing.com.
“I just thought he might be a bit under done he hasn’t ran (sic) since July, so that was great to see.
“Johnny was three wide…probably in the best part of the track there.
“He hit the front and he did hold on well.”
It is now full steam ahead to Champions Stakes Day at Flemington on November 5 with My Oberon firming in futures markets on the 2022 Champions Stakes (formerly the Mackinnon Stakes).
“He’ll come on a lot from that and hopefully we’ll find a nice race in two weeks,” Neasham said.
All-in Champions Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have the Crystal Mile winner at $8 to win with pre-field betting currently led by today’s Cox Plate favourite Anamoe ($2.40) and the Neasham-trained Zaaki ($4.20).
