Mazu Heads 2022 Doomben 10,000 Nominations & Betting

Peter & Paul Snowden’s spruik three-year-old Mazu is clear all-in favourite to win the 2022 Doomben 10,000 this winter in Brisbane following nominations for the opening elite level race of the carnival.

Racing Queensland took early entries for a host of the upcoming Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival features on Tuesday including those for the Group 1 $1 million Doomben 10,000 (1200m) on May 14.

The Doomben 10,000 nominations attracted 26 entries and including five three-year-olds looking to take on the older sprinters.

Sea Siren (2012) and Epaulette (2013) are the last three-year-old Doomben 10,000 winners and the early money suggests Team Snowden’s in-form Maurice gelding Mazu could be the next.

Post-nomination Doomben 10,000 odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au have the youngster at a short quote of $2.60.

To date Mazu has won six of his 10 career starts including his past five straight, the latest being the Group 2 $1 million Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) in the mud at Randwick on April 9.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden chases his fourth Doomben 10,000 win this winter following previous victories with Beaded (2011), the aforementioned three-year-old Epaulette (2013) and most recently subsequent dual The Everest hero Redzel (2017) in partnership with his son Paul.

The other three-year-old Doomben 10,000 nominees for this year are: Snitzel colt Generation for Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, the Godolphin-raced TJ Smith third place-getter Paulele, the Chris Waller-trained Ranch Hand and Mark Waller’s Kiwi-raced Sword Of State.

Following Mazu in all-in Doomben 10,000 betting at $7 is Robert & Luke Price’s Group 2 Victory Stakes winner from last weekend at Eagle Farm, Count De Rupee.

The Real Impact four-year-old was impressive returning to winning form when celebrating his first win since last November’s $1 million The Gong (1600m) ahead of his major target in a fortnight.

Three other runners are also currently under double-figures for the win with: Tony Gollan’s Magic Millions Sprint winning mare Isotope ($8), Group 1 Railway Stakes winner in New Zealand from the start of the year Entriviere ($9) now back with Mark Waller down under and Rob Heathcote’s former JJ Atkins champ Rothfire ($9).

Other notable hopes in the mix include the autumn’s Futurity Stakes winner Sierra Sue, the James Cummings-trained seven-year-old stalwart Kementari, dual Group 1 winning mare for Chris Waller September Run and the summer’s Magic Millions Cup champion Eleven Eleven.

The official Doomben 10,000 field of final acceptances is set for release on May 10, 2022 with the latest markets, courtesy of Ladbrokes.com.au, available in full here.
