2019 Kingsford Smith Cup Betting Update: Trekking for a Win

The major Brisbane race at Eagle Farm Racecourse this weekend is the Group 1 $700,000 KingsfordSmith Cup (1300m) where of the 18 engaged runners the latest betting markets have the in-form Godolphin galloper Trekking as the narrow favourite.

It is a wide-open edition of the Kingsford-Smith Cup in 2019 with just three hopefuls under $10 for the win in the current Ladbrokes.com.au odds.

Drawn the rails with Kerrin McEvoy to ride from gate one, the James Cummings-trained Street Cry four-year-old Trekking is at $6.50 and topping Kingsford-Smith Cup betting chasing his third win on the trot.

Two back Trekking took out the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick before a last start success on May 11 at Scone in the Listed Luskin Star (1300m).

Chasing back-to-back 1300m victories in this acid test, the gelding is in the right form to take out the Group 1 according to Cummings especially with a suitable Good track rating at Eagle Farm for the latest Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival feature.

“From his last seven runs on good tracks he’s won six. There’s some very good performers among the horses he’s beaten and I think he is up to a race like the Cup,” Cummings told AAP this week.

The other two single-figure fancies in the current Kingsford-Smith Cup odds online for Saturday are Tony Pike’s shock Doomben 10,000 champion The Bostonian ($7.50) and class mare I Am Excited ($8.50).

Jockey Michael Cahill retains the ride on gun Jimmy Choux four-year-old from NZ The Bostonian who jumped a $31 roughie in betting at Doomben on May 11 before his narrow upset over Osborne Bulls (2nd) in the Group 1 sprint.

Original plans were to give last year’s Sunshine Coast Guineas champ a few weeks between the Doomben 10,000 and a shot at Eagle Farm’s Group 1 $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), but Pike has opted to strike while the iron is hot and try to capitalise on The Bostonian’s fitness and ace form.

“He obviously loves Queensland. He went very well last year and it was a great win first-up this year in the Doomben 10,000,” Pike told the media through the week.

“He was always nominated for the Kingsford-Smith. With his fresh record there was consideration to not back him up and go straight to the Stradbroke.

“Michael Cahill rode him on Tuesday morning, he galloped him on the course proper at Eagle Farm, and it was an outstanding piece of work.

“We had a discussion with Michael and his owner David Archer after that piece of work on Tuesday.

“Four weeks is a long time in racing, a lot can go wrong, so while the horse is going well and with the form he is in it was a hard race to turn down.

“He seems to thrive over here and it’s a $700,000 Group 1 race on Saturday so it is nothing to be sneezed at.”

As for I Am Excited, the David Pfieffer-trained daughter of Snitzel was last seen taking out Eagle Farm’s Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on April 27.

She ran down star sprinter Redzel to take out that Brisbane feature race and has enjoyed a subsequent Warwick Farm winning trial to keep her fit ahead of the weekend.
