Markets on the latest Group 1 race in Australia are starting to head-up with money in 2018 Surround Stakes betting on Shumookh this Chipping Norton Stakes Day.
Due to run as Royal Randwick Race 7 at 4:10pm (AEDT), the recently upgraded Group 1 $500,000 James Boag’s Premium Surround Stakes (1400m) has attracted a final field of 11 three-year-old fillies.
The clear favourite in the Surround Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Godolphin-raced Flight Stakes winner from the spring, Alizee.
The well-bred daughter of Sepoy had her autumn kick-off at the Randwick track on February 17 and posted her third win at the course taking out the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).
She was impressive as the favourite despite the short distance and with winning form up to a mile will only present fitter second-up and ready to fire over the 1400m.
The James Cummings-trained Alizee has eased out from $2.05 to $2.15 for the win however after she drew out wide in barrier 10.
At the opposite end of the line-up set to get the rails run from barrier one is the lightly-raced Shumookh who the punters have already backed in from $6 to $4.50.
Tim Clark retains the ride on the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Dream Ahead filly who has just her fourth career start in the Group 1.
She only debuted on January 10 and broke her maiden status at Canterbury before back-to-back Randwick seconds including the narrow loss to Alizee in the Light Fingers Stakes.
The two best out of that traditional lead-up race are the only single-figure hopefuls for Saturday’s rematch.
Of the double-figure hopefuls in the Surround Stakes field the best fancied for the upset are Frolic ($10) and Shoals ($11) drawn in barriers five and four respectively.
Edward O’Rourke now prepares Husson filly Frolic who is best known for her Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) win at Randwick last March over She Will Reign.
She Will Reign turned the tables when the duo ran one-two in the iconic Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) and Frolic comes off a first-up fourth when only two lengths off Alizee in the Light Fingers.
The Anthony Freedman-trained Shoals is at Randwick for the first time since her Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) win over Formality here in April of 2017.
All of her subsequent runs have been in Melbourne and include a second in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m), where Alizee ran third, and her win over the older mares at Flemington on VRC Derby Day in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).
She was disappointing first-up however when eighth of nine runners behind Booker in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 10 and will be out to atone over the extra metres on Saturday.
Other notable hopes chasing the Surround Stakes win on way to a possible Rosehill run on March 17 in the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic (1500m) include Kiwi raider Melody Belle ($12) and the returning Chris Waller-trained Unforgotten ($12) who won three on the trot last spring.
