2018 Surround Stakes field: Alizee draws barrier ten

The James Cummings trained Alizee will have to negotiate a wide barrier is she is to make it two wins from two Autumn Carnival starts in the 2018 Group 1 $500,000 James Boag’s Premium Surround Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on on Saturday.

Alizee has drawn barrier ten in the eleven horse Surround Stakes field, is coming off a narrow first up win in the Group 2 $200,000 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 17 and the James Cummings trained filly will get her chance to collect her second Group 1 trophy if she can win the newly elevated Group 1 for the three year old fillies.

Glyn Schofield gets the ride again on the Sepoy filly after steering her to victory in the Light Fingers Stakes and he was also aboard when they combined for a win in the Group 1 $500,000 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick during the 2017 Sydney Spring Carnival.

Cummings has reported that Alizee has come through her first run in great style and has continued to work well on the tracks.

“She bounced out of the Light Fingers in good style, she’s feeling really good about herself and she seems to have come on again since last weekend,” Cummings said.

“She turned in a very impressive piece of work at Osborne Park on Tuesday morning.”

“Her fitness needs to go to another level to be competitive here over 1,400m, particularly with the likelihood of a bit of rain around.”

“But we couldn’t be more impressed with the way she’s gone about her preparation so far.”

“There’s an air of confidence about her, she looks set to go.”

Lightly raced filly Shumookh has the advantage of the inside barrier and will be ridden again by Tim Clark after he partnered the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly into second place, beaten a nose by Alizee, in the Light Fingers Stakes.

The Anthony Freedman trained Shoals has drawn barrier four with Josh Parr taking over from Mark Zahra who was aboard the filly for her first up run that proved to be a disappointing eighth in the Group 3 $150,000 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 10.

Shoals is a lot better than her first up effort suggests as she showed during the 2017 Melbourne Spring Carnival with a win against the older mares in the Group 1 $500,000 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on the first day of Melbourne Cup Week.

In contrast to Shoals, the Lindsay Park trained filly Rimraam returned in the Autumn in winning form with a narrow victory over Bring Me Roses in the Group 3 $150,000 The Vanity (1400m) at Flemington on February 17.

Rimraam has drawn nicely at barrier three with Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.

Early betting at Ladbrokes.com.au has Alizee as the dominant $2.10 favourite for the Surround Stakes with her nearest rival being Shumookh at $4.60 ahead of Frolic at $9.
