It is a star-studded edition of the 2017 Myer Classic this spring, a full field of female milers set to do battle in the VRC Derby Day showdown and our insider betting tips and latest odds on the race are detailed below.

The early scratching of the Tony McEvoy-trained Cool Passion (17) has paved the way for the first emergency Ellicazoom to gain a start in the full 16 starter Group 1 $500,000 Myer Classic (1600m) field.

The updated Myer Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are an even split between the only filly in the mix Shoals and the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained dual Group 1 winner Global Glamour ($5).

Shoals carries only 50kg at WFA and is against the older mares following her second to subsequent Moonee Valley Vase winner over the boys Aloisia in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Global Glamour meanwhile returned making her four-year-old debut at Caulfield on Cup Day in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) and was impressive from out wide winning with 58.5kg on her back.

So will the best two in betting battle it out for the Group 1 win at Flemington or is there value further down the Myer Classic betting markets tipping a mare like the autumn’s William Reid Stakes winner Silent Sedition ($7.50) to return to her best?

#2 Global Glamour ($5)

The favourites have a poor recent strike rate in the Myer Classic, which has proved a genuine roughies’ race in recent years with upsets from the likes of Appearance ($41 in 2012), Bonaria ($26 in 2014) and Politeness ($21 in 2015). That said, really liked the first-up win from last year’s Flight Stakes – Thousand Guineas winner Global Glamour. She won the Tristarc Stakes, which has proved a valuable Myer Classic formline to follow, and is going to be even more effective over a mile. Dual winner over the distance at elite level last spring and she’s down in weight from a better gate second-up here.

#10 Prompt Response ($17)

Of the longer-priced fancies this stablemate to Global Glamour stands out as a genuine place chance. The Benetau four-year-old improved on her unplaced run in the Blazer Stakes to finish a quarter-length third in the Group 3 Ladies Day Vase (1600m) at Caulfield. She’s had the run at a mile now and is down from 58kg there to 57kg. Wide again, but she is a dual runner-up from three Flemington starts and a Group 2 winner in Brisbane so has class and claims reaching peak fitness now.

#16 Shoals ($5)

The only three-year-old in the race looking to emulate the win by the filly I Am A Star last year is hard to ignore. She will be flying coming down from 55.5kg in the Thousand Guineas to 50kg and has an incredibly consistent record to date with four wins and two seconds from six career starts. Proven at this track over 1200m distance in the autumn so the straight is a non-issue and is the obvious danger.
