The money is coming thick and fast for young gun Tentyris to post his third straight Group 1 win down the famous Flemington straight when he jumps favourite in Saturday’s Newmarket Handicap 2026.

A bumper 15-horse field is gathered for this year’s Group 1 $2 million Newmarket Handicap (1200m) – a time-honoured sprint classic at HQ won by a host of greats in recent years including Black Caviar (2011), Hay List (2012), Redkirk Warrior (2017-18) and Bivouac (2020).
This season it is the boom Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Street Boss colt Tentyris sitting top of the Newmarket Handicap odds at $2.35 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
Winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes at the track and trip back in the spring, the classy chestnut earned comparisons to plenty of past star three-year-olds when resuming to beat home his older rivals in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) on February 14.
While Cylinder (2024) was the last three-year-old Newmarket Handicap winner, history is against Tentyris this weekend with Ajax right back in 1938 was the last to do so with the 57kg that this year’s top-elect must cart.
Still, the authority in which he won fresh was enormous.
He made a serious statement first?up in the Lightning, still last at the 200m before unleashing a blistering turn of foot to put them away with ease.
The rise to 1200m looks ideal, and if he repeats anything like that performance, he can stamp himself as the country’s premier sprinter.
He’ll jump from barrier 12 with his Coolmore winning hoop Mark Zahra, who recently returned from injury, reuniting with him for the ride.
Along with Tentyris, the sole other single figure fancy in Newmarket Handicap betting, is the Black Caviar Lightning runner-up My Gladiola ($6) in gate seven with Craig Williams in the saddle.
In Secret won the Newmarket as a three-year-old filly in 2023, and this year John McArdle‘s bonny daughter of I Am Invincible filly is out to be the next.
She’s shown a liking to the straight at Flemington with a strong record at the track (4:1-3-0) including seconds in the Coolmore and Black Caviar with the test now being for her to turn the tables on Tentyris.
Given 50.5kg by the handicappers, she’ll be ridden a kilo over allocation but still meets her last start conqueror far better in the weights for the rematch.
The next best in the markets at $11 at time of publish are War Machine and the Chris Waller-trained threat Angel Capital.
The early Newmarket Handicap market mover slashed from $21 at opening into 10/1, the Lindsay Park-trained War Machine runs second-up at his pet distance (7:2-2-2).
He was last seen running third in the Group 2 Australia Stakes at Pakenham in late January, he’s been kept ticking over with two exciting Flemington jump outs, and he’s proven at the track.
The reigning Stradbroke Handicap champ from last Brisbane Winter Carnival, War Machine’s latest Flemington assignment had him winning the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes by two lengths with 60kg last October.
With that in mind, fitter now and down to 57kg puts him in the frame.
Angel Capital, to be ridden by Ben Melham, is also second-up this weekend with the talented Harry Angel four-year-old solid when resuming for a fourth behind his stablemate Joliestar in Sydney’s Group 2 Expressway Stakes.
The rails-drawn Caballus ($14) coming off a second in the Expressway, the spring’s Moir Stakes winner at The Valley Baraqiel ($15) carrying the 57.5kg top-weight and the Ciaron Maher-trained Benedetta ($15) who rounded out the Black Caviar Lightning trifecta are considered the others most likely for an upset.
The 2026 Newmarket Handicap is set to run as Flemington Race 9 at 4:55pm (AEDT) as the penultimate event on Saturday’s All-Star Mile Day card.
