Nominations for the three Group 1 Epsom Handicap Day Randwick races have all now been released including those for the $750,000 Flight Stakes (1600m) which brings the Princess Series of races to a close.

2025 Flight Stakes Nominations: Quick Glance

  • 59 total nominations taken
  • 7 entries for Chris Waller chasing his fourth win and back-to-back victories after Lady Shenandoah (2024)
  • Within The Law narrow $4.20 favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au
  • Furious Stakes winner Apocalyptic close $4.50 second elect
  • 2 nominees for 11-time winning trainer Gai Waterhouse
  • Golden Slipper winning filly Marhoona nominated and paying $15

Offering a ballot exemption into the following year’s Doncaster Mile, the famous Randwick mile event for three-year-old fillies is named in honour of light who won the Cox Plate in 1945 and 1946.

Eleven-time winning trainer Gai Waterhouse is in with two entries chasing a dozen Flight Stakes trophies in 2025!

It has been won by many top-line mares during their three-year-old seasons including Lady Shenandoah last spring who went on to collect two subsequent Group 1 trophies that autumn in the Surround Stakes and Coolmore Classic.

One of the best in all-in Flight Stakes betting on the 59 nominees this spring at $4.50 through Ladbrokes.com.au is the lightly raced Extreme Choice filly Apocalyptic.

The bookies are taking no chances with this up-and-comer who went into last weekend’s Group 2 Furious Stakes as a maiden and beat a more seasoned field at just her second career start in style.

Apocalyptic sits on the second line of the post-nomination markets closely behind Bjorn Baker‘s current outright favourite Within The Law ($4.20).

Lucky Vega filly Within The Law threw her rider in the Golden Slipper as a juvenile but atoned two starts later with her eye-catching second in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes at this track and trip behind Nepotism to close out her autumn.

She has had two spring runs as a three-year-old when second in the Group 2 Silver Shadow and fifth with excuses in the Furious Stakes.

Gary Portelli’s daughter of Maurice Queen Of Clubs ($7) who ran third in the Silver Shadow and the consistent Annabel & Rob Neasham trained Tupakara ($8) are the other Flight Stakes nominated fillies currently under double figures in the markets.

Trapeze Artist filly Tupakara may be a maiden after seven starts to date but she has shown plenty of promise with a host of top three performances in tough company including in the Champagne Stakes (3rd) and Furious Stakes (2nd).

The early Flight Stakes market mover backed into $13 following her third win on the trot last weekend is the Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman trained Alpha Sofie.

The Capitalist filly handled her first Black-Type assignment very well when stepping out at The Valley to blitz her rivals in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes by two lengths putting her right in the frame for a Group 1 assignment this season.

Moody & Coleman have a standout Flight Stakes contingent in 2025 with their four nominees also including undefeated The Autumn Sun filly Vivid Sun and Ole Dancer.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse holds the Flight Stakes record having prepared her impressive 11th (third in partnership with Adrian Bott) success in 2023 with Tropical Squall.

Waterhouse & Bott have two nominees in the mix this spring with 100/1 outsiders Stardom and The Playwright.

Last year’s winning trainer Chris Waller meanwhile chases back-to-back victories and his fourth overall with seven entries including Spirit Of Boom filly Karinska who is the shortest priced of his fancies at $15.

Ciaron Maher‘s Atlantic Jewel runner-up Custom and Michael Freedman’s Golden Slipper champion Marhoona who is yet to race as a three-year-old are among the other most notable entries.
