Via Sistina Wins 2025 Ranvet Stakes

Another Saturday in Sydney and another Group 1 quinella for master horseman Chris Waller ensured at Rosehill in the 2025 Ranvet Stakes results with his brilliant mare Via Sistina defeating stablemate Lindermann in style to move one step closer to a season record held by the stable’s former ace mare Winx.

The spring’s historic eight-length Ladbrokes Cox Plate champion continued her rich vein of autumn form adding an eighth elite level victory to her glowing CV with a successful title defence in the Group 1 $1 million Ranvet Stakes (2000m) on Golden Slipper Day.

The Ranvet was the stepping-stone to glory down under for the daughter of Fastnet Rock last year when she won her Australian race debut in the weight-for-age feature.

She made history this year going back-to-back in the Ranvet Stakes for the first time since Theseo (2009 & 2010).

Via Sistina made history as the first dual Ranvet Stakes winner since Theseo in 2009-10!

“Well, she lit up our lives, as I said, 12 months ago today,” Waller told Sky Thoroughbred Central post-victory.

“We didn’t know what we had coming out of quarantine and obviously we had a good article and a good horse to work with.

“And a very supporting team with Yulong, we were lucky enough to get some support from them.”

After beating Fangirl and Lindermann home last time out in the Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes over the Randwick mile, the seven-year-old kept her dominance going with 1.53 lengths to spare on the line in the Ranvet Stakes results.

“She is a star,” declared Waller.

“She’s a lovely, big, unassuming horse. But come race day, she really turns it on.

“We don’t dare light her up in the mornings because what she’s capable of, like she’s a real powerhouse.

“Her track rider, Chris Harwood, said, oh, if we get her flying like one day she might just keep going as we saw.

“So, yeah, she’s a gentle giant that graces the turf.”

She now boasts six Group 1 wins for the season sitting just one outside of the record of seven held by Winx with the chance to surpass that over the next few weeks as Randwick’s The Championships approach.

Jockey James McDonald continued associations in the saddle of the class mare who started at a very short $1.22 quote in Ranvet Stakes betting and who raced right up to expectations.

Fawkner Park completed the Ranvet trifecta with the Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald trained Zoffany six-year-old a further half-length back in third after coming from last on the turn for home to finish in the money.

McDonald had the hot top fancy settled well in fourth as Waller’s American import, Full Count Felica, showed the way.

He peeled three wide around the final bend with Via Sistina roping in the front runners inside the final furlong before racing clear to confirm her status as the “greatest in the land”.

It is now onwards to the Group 1 $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 12 for the dual Ranvet Stakes champ who gets the chance to go one better than her distant second to runaway 6.5 length winner Pride Of Jenni in the event last year.

Via Sistina has firmed into $1.70 in the latest all-in 2025 Queen Elizabeth Stakes odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au.
