Group 1 racing for the spring takes place at Moonee Valley on Saturday with a field of sprinters facing off in the 2024 Moir Stakes including returning Slipper champion Lady Of Camelot.
The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Written Tycoon filly is narrow favourite to resume a first-up winner and beat home the older horses fresh in the Group 1 $750,000 Moir Stakes (1000m).
The bonny bay enjoyed an outstanding juvenile season headlined by a Group 1 Blue Diamond second and narrow win in Rosehill’s Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes.
At her latest start she went down when second carrying a hefty 59kg in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) during Randwick’s The Championships.
Her two recent trials at that track ahead of her spring bid have been eye-catching, and she looks ready to give things a shake-up despite this being her first run at Moonee Valley.
Current Moir Stakes odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au have the Slipper winning filly at $3.50 to handle the tight track and carry the 50kg lightweight to victory from gate two with Zac Lloyd riding.
The danger occupying the second line of Moir Stakes betting at a close $3.60 is the better experienced, Ciaron Maher-trained mare Estriella in gate eight with Blake Shinn in the saddle.
Also resuming for a new prep, the four-year-old daughter of I Am Invincible is another novice at The Valley.
She boasts a 50% winning strike rate from her eight starts so far however including Flemington’s $1 million Inglis Sprint down the famous straight back in March.
In late April Estriella ran a brave fifth in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville with a winning Cranbourne trial by five lengths bringing her on fitness-wise last week.
The other best in the Moir markets to round out the single figure fancies is Peter Moody’s brilliant I Wish I Win.
The Moody / Coleman runner jumps from gate eight with Luke Nolen aboard first-up after a stellar winter from the consistent son of Savabeel.
He was runner-up in the $20 million The Everest and third in the TJ Smith failing to defend his title before heading to Brisbane to run second in the Doomben 10,000 by a nose then atone by winning Eagle Farm’s Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m).
No doubt, the six-year-old is the class sprinter and Group 1 performer here but 1000m is likely to be too sharp for his liking with improvement to come later this campaign.
For value, the standout contender forgotten in betting at $18 Moir Stakes odds is the Gavin Bedggood-trained Moonee Valley specialist Mornington Glory.
Ethan Brown rides the rails-drawn short-distance galloper fit fourth-up and ready to fire chasing a hat-trick after back-to-back wins at this track and trip.
The Moir Stakes is set to run as Moonee Valley Race 9 at 4:50pm (AEST) as the penultimate event on Saturday’s bumper 10-race card.
