The Godolphin-raced Tailleur posted a narrow but convincing win saluting for the punters as the odds-on favourite In Saturday’s $160,000 Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.
Wet weather and a deteriorating track for Apollo Stakes Day saw two late scratchings from this year’s Triscay Stakes field leaving just seven runners with all the money on the James Cummings-trained Shooting To Win four-year-old Tailleur ($1.35).
The bonny bay was the fit mare in the mix, last seen winning by a runaway three lengths at Rosehill in mid-January.
With two early Heavy track wins in Sydney and Melbourne last August, there was plenty in favour of Tailleur in the Group 3 and she won accordingly getting an important Black-Type on the record.
Jockey Kerrin McEvoy continued associations guiding her to the all-the-way win that saw her have just a quarter-length to spare on the line over Matthew Smith’s brave runner-up Tricky Gal ($10).
Magic Albert five-year-old Tricky Gal – runner-up to Savatiano in the Group 2 Hot Danish in Sydney last November – made a real race of it late charging home down the outside over the closing stages.
She ran well, but in the end, the favourite was too good and was able to fend her off and seal the result.
In third rounding out the Triscay Stakes trifecta was the Brad Widdup-trained Icebath in her first run since finishing second behind Colette in the $7.5 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) on a Heavy (9) Rosehill track last October.
The Triscay Stakes serves as a potential guide to the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 13 and Icebath ($17) is the best fancied out of the Group 3 for the coming elite level.
Tricky Gal is at $26, while the Triscay Stakes winner Tailleur is yet to be added to the pre-nomination 2021 Coolmore Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au that can be accessed in full here.
