It is a battle between the young Thousand Guineas winning filly Odeum and star mare Mystic Journey in the 2020 Empire Rose Stakes betting markets at HQ on Victoria Derby Day this weekend.
Set to run as Flemington Race 5 at 2:20pm (AEDT), this season’s Group 1 $1 million Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) has drawn a sensational line-up of 14 fillies and mares and looks a great race on a day for racing purists.
Sitting top of the latest Empire Rose Stakes odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au paying a firm $3.60 to beat home her older rivals is the talented Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr trained Odeum in gate seven.
Jye McNeil is enjoying a great spring carnival and takes over from Michael Walker aboard the lightly-raced daughter of Written Tycoon who is out to make history.
To date, no Thousand Guineas winner has backed-up and won the Empire Rose Stakes in the same year but the markets suggest Odeum can be the first on the back of her nearly two length upset in the Group 1 over the Caulfield mile on October 10.
She gets the weight relief here dropping right down to just 49kg and is one of three last start winning fillies in this year’s event along with Chica Fuerte ($19) and Forbidden Love ($17) drawn wide in barriers 13 and 14 respectively.
Out to stop Odeum continuing her stellar spring form is the brilliant Adam Trinder-trained Mystic Journey, the pride of Tasmania also coming off a lead-up victory.
The $4.40 second elect is back at her pet track and distance, the now five-year-old daughter of Needs Further having won the inaugural $5 million The All-Star Mile here as a filly.
She then backed up and became the first Tasmanian-trained Group 1 winner in a century saluting in the Australian Guineas also held over the 1600m at HQ.
Nearly flawless over the mile (5:4-1-0) and definitely suited to the famous Flemington track (4:2-1-0), the $3.8 million earner was last seen winning the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at The Valley on September 25.
With her runs spaced she presents fresh returning to elite level grade and is sure to give the filly a huge challenge in this.
Outside the dominant duo the rest of the field can be found at double-figure Empire Rose Stakes odds including the Chris Waller-trained Madam Rouge ($12) in gate 12 who comes off that strong win in Caulfield’s Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) a fortnight back.
The other best in Empire Rose Stakes betting this Melbourne Cup Carnival include the consistent Tristarc Stakes runner-up Felicia ($13) who has run top three in her seven latest starts, the Archie Alexander-trained Chaillot ($13) looking to add to her perfect two-from-two Flemington track record and recent Sir Rupert Clarke third-placegetter Pretty Brazen ($14).
