The 2020 Caulfield Cup barrier draw for the world’s richest mile and a half handicap taking place in Melbourne on Saturday has been completed with mixed luck for the international contingent.
The Group 1 $5 million Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (2400m) features a class field of spring stayers facing off in Race 9 at 5:15pm (AEDT) on Saturday including five international raiders.
Aidan O’Brien’s well-supported top-weight Anthony Van Dyck (58.5kg) is the headliner overseas visitor in the Caulfield Cup field and will be ridden from the second widest gate by Hugh Bowman.
The in-form Galileo entire drew barrier 21 of 22 and will come into 17 of 18 if the emergencies fail to gain a run.
A name well-known to Aussie racing fans, Prince Of Arran also suffered a blow with the Charlie Fellowes-trained dual Melbourne Cup placed English raider drawing gate 19 for jockey Jamie Kah.
Last year’s Caulfield Cup winning hoop Damian Lane rides Finche from the Chris Waller stables from barrier 12 (potentially into 10).
Waller is after his first Caulfield Cup success, Sydney’s 10-time Premiership winning trainer also represented in the race by his last start Turnbull Stakes winning mare Verry Elleegant and Schweppes Oaks winner Toffee Tongue drawn ideally in barrier 11 and 5 respectively.
Since 1983 barriers seven and nine historically have been the most successful in producing Caulfield Cup winners and are drawn this season by Hawkes Racing’s one-time favourite Master Of Wine (7) and Joseph O’Brien’s Irish visitor Buckhurst (9).
Japanese raider Mer De Glace won the Caulfield Cup in 2019 from gate 17 of 18 and this year some of the other wider-drawn contenders include the Godolphin-raced Avilius (17) and Vow And Declare (18).
The Danny O’Brien-trained son of Shocking, Vow And Declare was runner-up in last year’s race before taking out the $8 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) and the gun stayer will jump wide with Damien Oliver aboard this weekend.
Chapada for Michael Moroney will look to do the Herbert Power Stakes – Caulfield Cup double for the first time since 2007 and is drawn in gate 16 for jockey Jye McNeil with just 50.5kg.
Barrier one in the Caulfield Cup field meanwhile belongs to Moroney’s other runner, Aktau, who hasn’t won since his ballot exemption success in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) back in March.
