Sunday at the Sunshine Coast sees the postponed...
Two-dollar favourite I Am Serious has secured a Group 3 win for the Chris Waller stable in the 2018 Angst Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
Not to be outclassed by Shumookh, the five-year old mare took it to the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) winner to win by a length, claiming its first win since June in a classy run.
Shumookh looked to be too good down the straight after sitting up on the speed, but eventually struggled in the soft conditions, while jockey James McDonald stalked from barrier to box to pounce in the final 200m.
“She has been running against some great company,” McDonald said.
Jumping from barrier 1 gifted I Am Serious a favourable inside draw, and after placing behind Avilius in her last two starts, it was nice to see her finally show the turn of foot she’s capable of.
“There is that trick again, 2000m back to the mile. He does it time and time again. It is a credit to the team and the mare, she turns up every time and delivers the goods rain, hail or shine.”
With back-to-back winner Dixie Blossoms also a chance, I Am Serious beat home a quality field on Saturday, nabbing Waller his first Angst Stakes win since Nocturnelle in 2012.
The champion trainer chose to keep a lid on whether or not I Am Serious will feature in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on November 3, though.
“2000m back to a mile suited her, as did the ground, she’s very good on a wet track” Waller said after the race.
He also had plenty of praise for the five-year old as she looks to continue strong form into the Spring.
“She turns up every time and she is very game and very gutsy. She’s just been a pleasure to train and hasn’t put a foot wrong so we’re delighted for connections and thankful for their faith in us.”
