Fifteen three year olds have been nominated for the Frank Packer Plate and as well as Tangled, Waller has entered Sambro, Higher Ground and The Lord Mayor.
Tangled is the best performed of the Waller quartet with a second to stablemate D’Argento in the Group 1 $600,000 Sky Racing Rosehill Guineas (2000m) at Rosehill on March 24 followed by a third to Levendi in the Group 1 $2m Harrolds Australian Derby (2400m) on day one of The Championships at Randwick on April 7.
Sambro showed plenty of promise during the 2017 Melbourne Cup Carnival with a second in the Group 3 $200,000 The Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington but was beaten in restricted class when he resumed after spell for a second in 1400m BenchMark 76 Handicap at Warwick Farm on March 28 then ran eighth in the Group 3 $200,000 China Horse Club Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on April 7.
Higher Ground has been working his way up through the grades and is a last start winner in a 1600m BenchMark 74 Handicap at Warwick Farm on April 11 while former Kiwi trained gelding The Lord Major has failed to impress at two runs for Waller with an eleventh in the Rosehill Guineas before tailing off to finish last in the Australian Derby.
Caulfield trained Mick Price will give Holy Snow another chance to win a race during the Sydney Autumn Carnival and has nominated the colt for the Frank Packer Plate.
Holy Snow has filled a place at his two Sydney runs for a second in the Group 2 $200,000 Chandon S Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 17 followed by a third in the Carbine Club Stakes.
Another good run from Holy Snow could see Price head to Queensland for a Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign.
“I don’t think he’s a Derby horse but the Queensland Derby being 2200 metres at Doomben might be up his alley,” Price told racing.com.
“Those big, grinding Kiwi staying horses – it may not be the year for that type of horse.”
“Blake Shinn’s not riding him on Saturday because he has a prior commitment but he was quite confident the horse can run out a strong 2000 metres so if that’s the case and he does win or run well then he might go to the QTC Derby.”
The Snowden Racing Team have nominated two, Icon Of Dubai and Temprado while Lindsay Park has only the one entry, last start Carbine Club Stakes winner Muraaqeb.
