A small but class field of 10 runners faces off for Moonee Valley Race 7 at 9:30pm (AEDT) in this year’s Group 1 $500,000 William Reid Stakes (1200m) and favourite in the latest odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Secret Agenda ($4.20).
Also the early market mover, the Mick Price-trained mare comes off a first-up Flemington win in the Listed Bob Hoysted (1000m) and will only be better second-up, fitter for her run and getting out over the 1200m.
Winner of last year’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide, Secret Agenda is also well proven at the tight Moonee Valley circuit with a win and two seconds from her three previous runs.
Favourites in William Reid Stakes betting however have a poor recent record in the race with only two saluting since 2008 and the last being super mare Black Caviar (2013).
Tonight is one of the most open editions of the weight-for-age clash with all but three of the remaining runners under $10 for the win.
Among the dangers looking at the William Reid Stakes odds are the Moir Stakes wining filly She Will Reign ($6) drawn the rails and the consistent Darren Weir-trained Hellbent ($6.50) coming off an Oakleigh Plate third.
So will Secret Agenda salute for the punters or is there value tipping an upset William Reid Stakes result from the likes of Peter & Paul Snowden’s returning colt Pariah ($8) or even last year’s Blue Diamond winning filly Catchy ($14)?
1st
#8 Pariah ($8)
Going for a bit of value in Team Snowden’s Redoute’s Choice colt who comes out of Rosehill’s Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) on Saturday due to the wet track and instead runs at The Valley first-up. He is undefeated fresh (2:2-0-0) and has trialled twice in Sydney well leading-up to his return. Yet to race at Moonee Valley, but has form the Melbourne way from last year when runner-up in the Blue Diamond Stakes. Is a dual placegetter from three goes at the 1200m, but should have matured over his time off and presents s a genuine danger looking to be the first three-year-old winner of the race since Foxwedge (2012).
2nd
#6 Secret Agenda ($4.20)
Deserving favourite who ticks plenty of boxes, this five-year-old is a Group 1 winner over the distance and is proven at Moonee Valley (3:1-2-0). This distance second-up should suit after the fresh win at Flemington carrying 60kg. She comes back to 56.5kg here and the money is starting to come for her to salute for the punters with top hoop Damien Oliver retaining the ride.
3rd
#7 Fuhryk ($31)
Lindsay Park’s Star Witness mare looks way overs in betting, the four-year-old undefeated at Moonee Valley (2:2-0-0) and bosting a super record over the 1200m (10:5-2-0). She will relish both after the tough first-up run in the Oakleigh Plate when 11th but only three lengths beaten. Valley suits better, is fitter second-up and better too over 1200m. Has been forgotten by the punters, but not us!
