The Gosford Guineas 2018 field faces off on Gosford Gold Cup Day this afternoon and the latest odds on the three-years-old sprint are dominated by the flying Bella Martini.
Team Hawkes saddle-up the in-form Stratum filly from barrier three in the now seven-starter Listed $150,000 Gosford Guineas (1200m) following the scratching of Sneaky Fella (3).
Coming off back-to-back Melbourne wins, the latest by a two and a half-length margin over Alaskan Sun at Caulfield on Boxing Day, Bella Martini is at on odds-on quote of $1.70 in Gosford Guineas betting to make it a hat-trick today.
Jockey Breton Avdulla comes aboard for the coveted ride and with outstanding form over the distance (4:3-0-1), Bella Martini shapes-up as the one to beat in Gosford Race 5 at 4:25pm (AEDT).
The other big Gosford Guineas betting market mover backed in from $4.20 to $2.80 this summer is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Island Missile.
Ace Sydney hoop Hugh Bowman is booked to ride the consistent Smart Missile gelding from the outside alley with Island Missile after his first win since August.
The bay comes off two close calls at Randwick this summer, the latest on January 6 when a half-length second over 1400m.
He comes back down to 1200m for the Guineas, but is yet to win over less than 1350m so will need to be at his best not to find this too sharp today.
The other single-figure fancy at $6.50 is Epidemic drawn in gate four with Glyn Schofield riding the James Cummings-trained Lonhro filly.
She won successive sprints over this distance in Sydney earlier in the season before a lead-up third to Sasso Corbaro on December 30 at Royal Randwick over 1300m.
There are generous odds on offer for the remainder of the runners including the rails-drawn We Have Lift Off ($15) who comes off a maiden win.
Brad Widdup’s Exceed And Excel filly from Hawkesbury saluted over 1100m at Canterbury on December 20 after her credible fourth on debut to Champ Elect at Doomben in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1100m) 12 months earlier.
Forced to the sidelines for a year, she came back in outstanding fashion and will be even fitter second-up looking a genuine danger at a price with the soft run from barrier one.
The other last start winner in the mix out to extend the form is the Scott Singleton-trained Fame Shines who is the $101 roughie shot of the lot.
The colt beat nothing of note over 1000m at Orange in his maiden success and would need to be improving out of sight to challenge a better credentialed field here.
