Summer Passage draws wide barrier again in 2017 Blue Sapphire Stakes

Kiwi colt Summer Passage has drawn another wide barrier in the Group 3 $350,000 Catanach’s Jewellers Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Matamata co-trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott scratched Summer Passage from the Group 1 $2m Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) last Saturday after he drew the extreme outside barrier in the sixteen horse field.

The Snitzel colt was out of luck again with barrier eight in the ten horse field for the Blue Sapphire Stakes but O’Sullivan said that he was happy to keep him at the shorter distances.

“He’s got a good record over the shorter distances so we don’t think it’s a problem and Hugh Bowman will be riding him in the Blue Sapphire,” O’Sullivan said.

Summer Passage is a Group 1 winner back in New Zealand with his victory in the NZ$200,000 Sistema Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie in March before running second to Invader in the Group 1 $1m Inglis Sires’ (1400m) at Randwick during the 2017 Sydney Autumn Carnival.

Summer Passage looked to be back to his best with a last start second to Perast, after setting the pace, in the Group 3 $175,000 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on October 1.

Hugh Bowman takes over the reins on Summer Passage from Mark Zahra who will stick with the Lindsay Park trained Muraaqeb after they teamed up to win a 1200m three year old Plate at The Valley on September 29.

Muraaqeb has also drawn out wide at nine while his stablemate Formality has a favourable barrier at four.

Thousand Guineas winning trainer Aaron Purcell will saddle up his smart colt Jukebox who will jump from the outside gate with Craig Williams in the saddle.

Unbeaten filly Crown Witness has drawn the rails with Ben Melham booked to ride and the Star Witness three year old has had a freshen up since making it three wins from three starts when she took out the Group 3 $150,000 Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 19.
