It is a wide-open affair in 2017 A.R. Creswick Series Final betting for Flemington on Saturday with half the field at single-figures for the win.
Running as Flemington Race 5 at 2:10pm (AEST) on Flemington Finals Day, there are a dozen sprinters in the mix for this winter’s $120,000 Listed A.R. Creswick Series Final (1200m).
It is a tough job for the punters however with the bookies having a really hard time separating the best in the markets.
Current narrow favourite in the latest AR Creswick Series Final odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $4.40 is Overstep chasing a third win from her four most recent starts.
Chris Waller’s progressive Exceed And Excel filly has twice won from five Flemington runs to date, including her narrow effort over 1100m here defeating Invincible Al on June 24.
She will need to be improving going up from 54kg to 56.5kg on the weekend, but is proven down the straight and has Craig Newitt retaining the ride.
Runner-up to Overstep last time out, the Patrick Payne-trained I Am Invincible gelding Invincible Al is the big danger again for the rematch.
He pays $4.60 to turn the tables on the filly despite rising from 54.5kg to 57.5kg this weekend.
Luke Nolen is booked for the ride and Invincible Al, who has been brought-on with a recent trial, will eat-up the extra metres stepping up to 1200m.
Occupying the third line of betting but giving the weight away is then the Darren Weir-trained Ken’s Dream (58.5kg) at $5 to post his first win since success over this distance with the same weight at Caulfield back on April 8.
He has been Group 2 performed in Adelaide since and comes off back-to-back fifths.
The last was behind Overstep at Flemington late last month and he will be out to bounce back looking well weighted dropping a kilo for this, while those that finished ahead of him in the lead-up race rise in weight.
Highland Beat ($6) is also right in the mix according to the markets after the Lindsay Park-trained Exceed And Excel colt ran a brave third only a length off the winner Revolving Door at Moonee Valley on June 12.
He has raced at Flemington just once before in much tougher class, but was well beaten when 10th to Saracino last September in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m).
The colt is a three time Group placegetter and Group 1 performer however and is up to this if he can return to his juvenile form.
Rounding out the hopes under $10 to take out the three-years-old event are the rails-drawn Wanted filly from Adelaide Mystified ($9) racing at the track for the first time and the Danny O’Brien-trained O’Reilly colt Sacred Sham ($9.50) drawn the opposite end of the field in gate 12.
