The John & Chris Meagher-trained Cruising Speed will be at her best over a mile according to syndicator Grant Morgan but the shorter distance of Saturday’s 2016 Just Now Quality looks right for her third-up.
A dozen mares are still in the mix for the $100,000 Listed Just Now Quality Handicap (1300m) at Eagle Farm Racecourse this weekend after the early scratching of the rails-drawn Girl Sunday.
The Gerald Ryan-trained Girl Sunday is also part-owned by Morgan and will stay at home running at Rosehill on Saturday.
Left representing Morgan’s Ontrack Thoroughbreds syndication in the race is four-year-old Savabeel Cruising Speed.
She has won four of her eight career starts to date and has winning form up to 1400m.
Morgan is confident she’s a miler in the making, but thinks three runs in the 1300m of the weekend’s race will suit.
“She will probably be best when she gets to 1600 metres but the 1300 on Saturday should suit her at this stage of her campaign,” he told AAP.
At the Eagle Farm track she is two-from-four including a win over the 1300m in a Class 4 for fillies and mares two back at the start of November.
Her latest run a fortnight ago saw her face a similar line-up of rivals in the Listed Colin McAlpine Memorial Classic (1200m).
She and jockey James Orman crossed a game 2.2 lengths away fourth to the winner Elegant Composure in that and Morgan hopes Cruising Speed can finish closer again in the Just Now.
The mare is well weighted on 55.5kg and jumps from barrier three with Orman retaining the ride.
“She is much better off here at the handicap conditions,” Morgan said.
“We have always felt that Cruising Speed would win a stakes race.”
In the latest Just Now Handicap odds at Ladbrokes.com.au Cruising Speed is at a double-figure quote of $10.
There are four single-figure fancies in the markets including the firming Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Ravi ($2.45) from Sydney who Kerrin McEvoy rides.
The other best in Just Now Handicap betting include last start Colin McAlpine winner Elegant Composure ($5.50) who rises to Saturday’s 58kg top weight and Matthew Dunn’s last start Rosehill winner Madotti ($8.50).
The Meagher’s and Morgan have the chance at securing two stakes races at Eagle Farm on Saturday with Savanna Amour one of the best in betting for the rescheduled $100,000 Listed Mode Plate (1200m).
