A talented field of staying types will face off in tonight’s 2016 JRA Cup at Moonee Valley Racecourse, betting tips and the updated odds for the Moir Stakes Night clash found below.
This season’s $200,000 Group 3 The Sporting Globe After The Last JRA Cup (2040m) field is down to 10 runners after the early scratching of the Robert Hickmott-trained Nevis (6).
Of the remaining hopes in the JRA Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au for Moonee Valley Race 3 at 7:30pm (AEST), the best fancied by the bookies at $4 is Real Love.
The Darren Weir-trained mare carries the 58kg top weight, but still looks to be placed okay in the weights based on what the daughter of Desert King has achieved to date.
She’s a Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) winner, has multiple other Group wins over the past season on the record around these metres and finished runner-up in her last Valley run behind Awesome Rock in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m).
Is out to atone for the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) seventh to Jameka last time out at Caulfield, but is more than capable of doing so from the good gate (five) tonight.
In an open JRA Cup betting market this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival the other best fancied include the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained import Tom Melbourne ($4.20) who holds nominations for the 2016 Cox Plate and Spring Cups, and Hickmott’s remaining runner Observational ($4.80).
So will one of the best in betting get the job done or is there value further down the odds in the likes of the Robert Smerdon-trained Ipswich Cup winner from the winter Maurus ($9.50) or the well-weighted Lindsay Park-trained seven-year-old Bold Sniper ($14)?
1st
#7 Tom Melbourne ($4.20)
Lots to like about the spring potential of this still lightly-raced former European who has had five wins from 10 career starts to date including the Albury Cup (2000m) in the wet back in March. Last start sixth in the Naturalism Stakes was okay and can improve tonight still weighted okay (55kg) and just looking for the consistency ahead of a tougher target now.
2nd
#2 Magnapal ($8.50)
If following the Naturalism form into tonight, then the Terry & Karina O’Sullivan-trained fifth placed Magnapal is worth looking at for a place. He rises in the kilos from 55.5kg to 57kg but has Luke Currie staying on and is Group 1 performed.
3rd
#1 Real Love ($4)
The deserving favourite might just turn up and take some beating. She is classy and the draw is ideal for her and Brad Rawiller. She is twice placed from two Valley runs, has wining form at the distance, took out the JRA Cup in Brisbane during the winter and with the right run can salute for punters.
