The early price for Tony Gollan‘s classy Queenslander, Pembrey, to go all the way and win the Princess Series Grand Final this spring has been slashed following her impressive first-up victory in Saturday’s 2026 Silver Shadow Stakes results at Randwick.

The progressive Prague filly lined up against a class field in the key support act on Winx Stakes Day and easily accounted for Bangkok Hotti (2nd) and Global Goal (3rd) with a 2.44 length romp home fresh in this year’s Group 2 $300,000 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m), much to trainer Gollan’s delight.
“She was bloody good,” the Brisbane-based horseman told Sky Racing Thoroughbred after the event.
“She has given us a really good feel at home. But as all of us trainers know when they show that good two-year-old form they come back at three with all these expectations, you want to see them do it on race day.”
Running for the first time since her Golden Slipper flop in the autumn, the now three-year-old blitzed her new season debut returning to her best and putting the Group 1 $750,000 Flight Stakes (1600m) back at the track on Epsom Handicap Day (October 3) firmly in sight.
Sending her record up to three wins from five starts, Pembrey added a second Group victory to her CV having won the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes as a two-year-old.
In an arrogant display off a lovely ride by the maestro James McDonald, the Kia Ora-bred and raced Silver Shadow Stakes winner drew away late to win with authority and set the tone for a big Sydney Spring Carnival ahead.
“It was great to have James (McDonald) booked on her two or three weeks ago which was a big help to me, and she has had a faultless preparation,” Gollan said.
“I came here pretty confident, but I wanted to see her to do it on race day.”
“He has ridden her three times now and was always going to ride her confidently. I think when we get her out to 1400m she will be just as effective. I want to follow the Princess Series as long as her form holds up and she keeps on improving on what we have seen today.”
Following her ultra-impressive display, Pembrey immediately firmed in futures betting on a few of the upcoming Group 1 features for the spring including not only the Flight Stakes but also the $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) on September 26.
She came in from $51 to $21 in early Golden Rose 2026 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, and $26 to $15 in the latest Flight Stakes betting markets.
Gollan though is focused on the Flight Stakes as the end goal, with Pembrey likely to progress through the usual channels including a potential next-up run in the second leg – the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) on September 5.
“There is still more improvement to come from her like all these first-up fillies,” he said.
“We had her pretty ready as she is a filly that gets up and about for her first-up run. I am really keen to go through the series with her.”
McDonald however said the bar could be set for an even grander spring assignment.
“Tony (Gollan) said she’s come back good, and physically she has,” he said.
“Her neck’s a lot more rounder and she’s carrying condition. He made special mention that she’s calmed down a lot, I know she was still a little bit busy, and that was evident in that performance.
“That was exceptional. Great sustained speed, and to be able to quicken off that, that’s impressive.
“Give her a slot (in The Everest).”
The world’s richest turf race, the $20 million The Everest takes place at Royal Randwick on Saturday October 17 and Pembrey is currently paying $51.
