On Saturday a bumper eight-race Magic Millions race card lights up the Gold Coast Racecourse including the Magic Millions Cup 2015 – betting tips for which are detailed below.
There are 14 remaining hopefuls following the early scratching of Snippets Land from this year’s lucrative $400,000 Magic Millions Cup (1400m), which is the third richest race on the program.
Heading the Magic Millions Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.70 is the rails-drawn Strawberry Boy for Chris Waller who comes off a third to Rudy in the Group 2 Villier Stakes (1600m) at Randwick from December 13.
Following the in-form Redoute’s Choice six-year-old in the Magic Millions Cup odds are then 2012 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Driefontein ($5.50) and The Bowler ($6) who won over 1400m at Flemignton on New Year’s Day in his lead-up run.
So will the top three in the markets also be the first three over the line in the Gold Coast Race 7 at 4:15pm (local) on Saturday?
#2 Strawberry Boy ($3.70)
Deserving race favourite gets the gun draw with the inside alley and Damian Browne riding. Has good form over this distance (7-2-2-1) and lead-up efforts have been very good. First-up winner over the distance at Hawkesbury in black-type company beating Monton, ran third to stable mate I’m Imposing in the Festival Stakes and then third to Rudy when up over the 1600m at Royal Randwick in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes on December 13. Had the inside alley that day and will race well from the barrier again here over a better distance and against arguably easier company.
#1 Driefontein ($5.50)
Gai Waterhouse’s top Fastnet Rock mare carries the 59.5kg top weight so gives the kilos away to some decent types and is also drawn wide in barrier 11 but is still a genuine chance that shouldn’t be ignored. Won the $2 million 2YO race on Magic Millions Day as a juvenile on protest and so boasts an excellent record at the Gold Coast (3-2-0-1). Yet to win over the 1400m but has three times ran in the money from six starts. She comes off a December 27 Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) sixth behind Barbed and Tommy Berry stays on here guaranteeing a good finish.
#5 Saluter ($11)
Won the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in 2013 and is after another win at the track this Saturday. Robert Heathcote-trained five-year-old finished second in four straight leading into the break before a first-up win at the Sunshine Coast over 1200m on Boxing Day beating Excellantes. Jim Byrne stays on and drops from 55kg to the 54kg minimum for this.
