Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse and jockey Tommy Berry over from Hong Kong for the day have combined for their second victory at Eagle Farm in the Dane Ripper Stakes 2014 where Cosmic Endeavour showed off her spring potential.
A three-year-old daughter of ill-fated sire Northern Meteor, Cosmic Endeavour shot into favouritism for today’s $200,000 Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) after the early scratching of the Chris Waller-trained Catkins.
She eased out it the hours leading up to the jump however eventually jumping at a juicy $6.50.
Those that stayed on the up-and-comer though were well rewarded with Cosmic Endeavour proving too good for the fellow fillies and mares, thriving on the firm track to make it back-to-back wins.
Last start she won the Inglis Scone Guineas over 1400m in Sydney with Kerrin McEvoy aboard, Berry more than happy to take the reins today for her second Group 2 win of the season.
Berry, who won today’s opener with Sports Edition taking out the Hampden Stakes, was also aboard for her first in the Sapphire at Randwick in April and rates her a lovely type who will only keep improving.
“Very honest mare this,” he said of Cosmic Endeavour.
“She’s continued to hold her form.
“Consistent, relaxed. You can put her wherever you want in the race.
“She gives you her heart and soul every time she goes into a race and that’s all you can ask for.”
She had to work for the win today too running down a mare that’s very hard to beat, her Group 1 winning stablemate Driefontein.
The Robert Sangster Stakes champ, ridden by Nash Rawiller, hit the front after settling leading them round.
Over the final few hundred metres though Cosmic Endeavour and Berry, who were sitting fifth just off the pace, came charging up the middle.
They ran to the lead with 100m to go and shot away, their turn of foot too sharp for Driefontein ($6) who held on for second while the Luke Price-trained Belle De Coeur ($6.50) ran a luckless third after encountering traffic.
The Dane Ripper Stakes has produced three winners of the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) over the past eight years, and that finishing Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival feature on June 21 is on the cards for Cosmic Endeavour.
“The Tattersall’s Tiara, as long as Gai’s happy with them over the next two weeks’ they’ll run,” Waterhouse’s stable representative Mark Newham said trackside today speaking of the Dane Ripper Stakes quinella.
Looking further ahead Newham is convinced Cosmic Endeavour will be well positioned in the top mares’ races of the spring including the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival in November.
“She will keep improving and could be a Coolmore Stakes or Myer type in the spring,” Newham said.
The Tattersall’s Tiara 2014 nominations close on June 16 and will be published right here at Races.com.au so stay tuned.
