Dothraki Draws Rails in 2014 Queensland Guineas Field

Gerald Ryan’s Stradbroke Handicap-bound three-year-old Dothraki has come up trumps with barrier one at Eagle Farm on Saturday in the Queensland Guineas 2014 field.

One of a capacity number of up-and-comers in this year’s $350,000 Group 2 Sky Racing Queensland Guineas (1400m), Mossman colt Dothraki is set to get the run of the race from the inside alley.

It’s a bumper line-up of 18 starters plus five emergencies, a number of which were also included in the first acceptances for the $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) Saturday week.

Winner of the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) two back, Dothraki is one of the young Straddie hopes looking to stake their claims with a win at the track this weekend.

He was last seen running third in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) on May 17 behind two other Stradroke Handicap entries, winner Havana and runner-up Into The Red.

In the Queensland Guineas Havana has also drawn well in barrier four with Luke Nolen to ride Paul Messara’s in-form Starcraft colt.

They handled a seven-day turnaround to win the Fred Best on the back of a Mick Dittman second and have the fitness edge here too.

Into The Red meanwhile has drawn wide with barrier 19, into 14 with emergencies out, with Chris Munce to ride Kelso Wood’s locally-trained Not A Single Doubt colt.

Also coming via a good run in the Fred Best Classic, and a possible Stradbroke starter on June 7, is then the fourth placed Hucklebuck.

Prepared by Phillip Stokes in Adelaide, Elvstroem three-year-old Hucklebuck won the Group 3 CS Hayes (1400m) at Flemington in February before stepping up to Group 1 company for their commendable eighth when beaten only two and a half lengths by Shamus Award in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in March.

They raced again then in the Fred Best when one and a half lengths away fourth, an effort they’re tipped to improve on going up to 1400m at Eagle Farm where the roomier track will suit.

Sydney’s Gai Waterhouse meanwhile has accepted for all three of her Queensland Guineas nominees with two assured of a run.

Liberty’s Choice (barrier 11) and Ryker (barrier 17), both sons of Redoute’s Choice, are in the starting line-up having run second and third respectively behind Cosmic Endeavour last start in the Inglis Scone Guineas.

Their stable mate Longma then sits as the first emergency with just one withdrawal needed to get the Sebring colt, fourth at Randwick last Saturday in a 1400m BenchMark 80 handicap, into the field.

Other notable Queensland Guineas hopes this year then include the John O’Shea-trained duo of Gold Coast Guineas runner-up Safeguard and the returning Agadir, Queensland Day third placegetter from last weekend Le Val, New Zealand-trained filly Costa Viva, and the Gillian Heinrnich-trained Eastern Prince.

Eastern Prince shoots for their third straight win following their Listed Queensland Day (1200m) victory last Saturday but will need to be at their best after drawing the extreme outside barrier.
