Precedence Tops Premier’s Cup 2014 Field

Evergreen veteran Precedence is back at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday out to defend their title in the 2014 Premier’s Cup to round out Doomben 10,000 Day in Brisbane.

Capping off a bumper nine-race program this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Channel Seven Premier’s Cup (2200m) is set to jump at 4:20pm (AEST) and has attracted a final field of 15 hopefuls.

Heading the field and weights with 59.5kg out wide in barrier 12, but with time to overcome the draw, is the Bart & James Cummings-trained Precedence who won the race last year.

A rising nine-year-old, the Zabeel gelding may be getting on in the years but their recent form suggests they’re not quite ready to bow out of racing.

Last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival Precedence won the Premier’s Cup mid-prep but this season they have had just the one lead-up run.

After a good spring in Melbourne that included wins in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) and the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m), they returned to racing at the Gold Coast on May 3.

There Precedence carried 59kg to finish a brave third behind subsequent Doomben Cup winner Streama in the Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m), an effort they’ll be out to repeat with two kilos more than the 57.5kg they had on their back last Premier’s Cup.

Another galloper who ran well in this race 12 months ago is the Lisa Latta-trained Zennista.

Zennista was just a length away from Precedence in third, an effort the New Zealand mare will be looking to improve on this winter.

She’s had the one run down under this prep when sixth to Pretty Pins in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) on May 10.

The horse that won the Chairman’s Handicap this year, the John Thompson-trained Pretty Pins, is then one of the top chances for Saturday’s rematch.

The five-year-old Pins mare carried 54kg last start and gets in on the minimum again with jockey Ryan Wiggins retaining the ride in barrier four.

Chairman’s Handicap runner-up Danchai is also set to back-up in the Premier’s this weekend, Chris Waller’s in-form Authorized gelding having also run second to Spillway in the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) the start before at Randwick.

Drawn in barrier seven for Saturday carrying 54kg, Danchai drops back a notable 2.5kg from their weight last start and is a big chance in the race as Waller’s only final acceptor.

Just three other gallopers are allocated above the 54kg aside from Precedence meanwhile.

Following the top weight are Anthony Freedman’s European import Waldpark (57.gk), the Shaune Ritchie-trained Kiwi Military Move (56.5kg) and the aforementioned Zennista (55.5kg) drawn ideally in barrier two.

The only other last start winner in the mix aside from Pretty Pins meanwhile is the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Zephyron also drawn well in gate three.

Glen Boss is set to jump in the saddle of the progressive Zabeel five-year-old who improved on some dismal early autumn form to win the Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) at Rosehill three weeks ago.

The complete Premier’s Cup 2014 field, barriers, jockeys and weights are detailed in the table below.
