Sydney punters are treated to a double shot of Group 1 racing action at Randwick Racecourse this weekend, the day’s marquee event being the Randwick Guineas 2014.

Set to steal the show as Randwick Race 7 at 4:47pm (AEST), this year’s $600,000 Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) has drawn a final field of 15 three-year-olds.

Heading the field in saddle cloth numbers one and two are two widely drawn hopefuls, the Peter Moody-trained Melbournite Dissident and from further abroad New Zealand raider El Roca.

Set to jump from barrier 13 with Jim Cassidy in the saddle, Moody’s Sebring colt Dissident comes off some crack lead-up form.

Runner-up to super star Zoustar in the Golden Rose back in September, Dissident is twice tested at the mile already.

Then ran sixth to Streama in the Group 1 George Main and fourth to Long John in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas last prep.

This time in they’ve had two runs, a first-up second in the Eskimo Prince Stakes and then their tight win in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on March 1.

Cassidy is confident they’ll improve on that again here and have flown under the Randwick Guineas radar this autumn.

“Going to a mile will suit this horse because he can travel in the first couple and still be strong at the end,’’ Cassidy told The Daily Telegraph.

“He keeps putting himself in the mix, he is a tough customer and he has great form around Zoustar.”

El Roca meanwhile is one wider in barrier 14, Hugh Bowman set to jump aboard.

The Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Fastnet Rock colt won the Listed Eskimo Prince in mid-February, their first run since a Caulfield Guineas fifth in Melbourne, before their last start second to Terravista in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) just last Saturday.

Other exciting Randwick Guineas hopes coming off nice form then include Australian Guineas runner-up Criterion (barrier eight), the James & Bart Cummings-trained improver Eurozone (barrier four), the John O’Shea-trained Group 1 performer Savvy Nature (barrier six) coming off a first-up third in the Hobartville Stakes and Atlante (barrier five).

A stable mate of star Kiwi It’s A Dundeel, the Murray Baker-trained Fastnet Rock colt Atlante took out the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas (1600m) last November.

They then made their Australian debut two weeks ago in the Hobartville running a very close second behind Dissident.

Baker will also saddle-up the lightly raced High Chaparral gelding Show The World (barrier seven) who is first-up here and who is yet to finish out of the money back home in NZ.

Flying Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse, fresh off her Australian Cup victory last weekend with Melbourne Cup champ Fiorente, meanwhile has three chances in Saturday’s showdown.

Waterhouse’s Randwick Guineas hopes this year are Golden Rose third placed Bull Point (barrier six) coming off a Futurity Stakes fourth, Woodbine (barrier 11) who ran fourth in the Hobartville and Romantic Touch with the extreme outside gate to overcome.
