This weekend Rob Heathcote’s in-form mare Fillydelplhia will shoot for her second win from three starts when she takes on a top field of milers in Doomben’s Brisbane Handicap 2013.
One of five stakes races on the Brisbane race card on Saturday, this year’s $80,000 Listed Pages Event Equipment Brisbane Handicap (1600m) has drawn a final field of 12 starters.
Heading the field and weights on 58kg with a rating of 102 is Bianconi six-year-old Fillydelphia who will jump from barrier nine with Michael Cahill aboard.
Two back she improved on recent form and enjoyed a sensational three and a half length victory over Zedlion in an open handicap over the 1400m at Eagle Farm.
Last start she backed up at Doomben on November 30 and did well on a Heavy (8) track when second behind Absalon in the Listed Recognition Stakes (1600m).
It’s the same track, distance, weight and also a chance of the same wet conditions in Saturday’s Brisbane Handicap.
Recognition Stakes winner Absalon is also set to back up in the Brisbane Handicap drawn in gate seven with Larry Cassidy staying on.
They carried 54kg for their last start black type success, their second win on the trot following a good effort over 1400m at Randwick last month, but go up to 56kg for Saturday.
Along with Absalon the only other last start winner in the Brisbane Handicap field this year is the flying Hora Sexta in gate three.
Paul Robbins’ Lonhro four-year-old has won five of their 12 career starts, all five wins coming within their last six starts.
The winning streak started at the Gold Coast in August and after three on the trot there the Murwillumbah-based gelding went to Eagle Farm for a fourth after blundering near the 1000m in a Class 3 over the mile.
They were back in the winners’ stall at Doomben next start however when defeating Arado on November 5 backing up 18 days later to win at Eagle Farm over 1400m.
The other runner coming off a nice last start effort is then Darryl Hansen’s Redoute’s Choice seven-year-old Essington who is turning into something of a hoodoo bet for first four punters.
Incredibly they have finished fourth in their past six starts, Hansen hoping to break the frustrating run with a top three finish here.
Other notable hopes then include the Kelso Wood-trained Group performer Someday and Black Cash for Kelly Doughty who won the greys’ race at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
