Nominations for the world’s richest juvenile’s race have now closed with 16012 yearlings making up the early entries for the 2014 Golden Slipper next Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The upcoming edition of the $3.5 million Group 1 Tooheys New Golden Sipper (1200m) is set for Saturday April 5, 2014, at Rosehill Gardens and the race is on for a shot at the title and lucrative prize money.
One of the most notable early Golden Slipper entries comes from the BC3 Thoroughbred’s contingent with the famous $5 million yearling purchase dubbed for now as “Jimmy”.
A Redoute’s Choice colt out of Helsinge, the yearling made headlines earlier in the year attracting a record purchase price being a half-brother to super mare Black Caviar.
The colt, as with the majority of Golden Slipper nominees, also features in the 2014 Blue Diamond Stakes nominations taken on Tuesday by the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC).
Some of the best represented nominees meanwhile include Darley Australia (155) and their head trainer Peter Snowden who won the event back in 2010 with Blue Diamond – Golden Slipper double champion Sepoy, Mick Price (72), David Hayes (85) who leads the Blue Diamond entries and Victoria’s premier horseman Peter Moody (56).
Also with a rich Golden Slipper-bound bunch of youngsters is Gai Waterhouse with the second highest number of entries – 95.
Waterhouse boasts five Golden Slipper trophies to date, one less than her record-holding father Tommy Smith, having won the past two editions of the race with Pierro (2012) and Overreach (2013).
Overreach’s sire Exceed And Excel is represented by 32 of his progeny in the early entries this year trailing top sires Fastnet Rock (86), Snitzel (56) and Northern Meteor (52).
2014 Golden Slipper first acceptances are open until 3pm (AEST) on Tuesday October 1, 2013.
Following that will be second declarations on February 4 next year, late entries incurring a $150,000 fee remaining open until Monday March 31.
The Golden Slipper Stakes final field is then due for release on April Fool’s Day, April 1, 2014.
