Gai Waterhouse trained Pierro has firmed as favourite ahead of today’s 2012 Silver Slipper Stakes, perhaps a sign that the punters like the Son of Lohnro’s chances in the wet.
Following some bad weather in Sydney that has continued in to the weekend, the Rosehill Garden’s track has been rated heavy (9) and consequently Pierro has been backed in to $2.60 (from $2.80).
The colt will be aided by a barrier draw that will keep him out of trouble, coming out of gate seven with experienced Nash Rawiller at the reigns.
There is no doubting the quality or pedigree of the two-year-old, but having never run in the wet, it will be interesting to see how the Golden Slipper bound horse handles the conditions.
Hussousa ($4.00) is the second favourite, a John Thompson trained filly that has had one win from two starts and is coming off a third-place-effort in the Tom Cassar Widden Stakes on February 18.
Assassinate, who was tipped yesterday by Races.com.au to run second behind Pierro, is currently paying $6.50 at bookmaker.com.au.
The black colt has also received a good wet weather barrier draw and will start from gate six with Glyn Schofield the jockey in charge.
David Pfieffer trained Nediym’s Quest is the market mover at bookmaker.com.au and is currently paying $6.50.
Another horse set to be among the chances in the important Golden Slipper lead up race is Meidung ($6.50).
Trainer Peter Snowden believes today’s Group 2 event will be a good test to see where the filly is at, following a win on debut in the Harvey Norman Handicap last October.
“I’ve said before and I’ll say it again, you don’t take two-year-olds off one win,” he said.
“You’ve really got to see them do it a couple of times.
“I’ll know more after Saturday.”
Other horses included to run in the 2012 Silver Slipper Stakes are A Bridge too Far ($15.00), Brave Soul ($21.00) and Kyria ($26.00).
Faustus (#3) and Diamonda Costa (#4) have been scratched.
