This Saturday’s Victoria Derby Day at Flemington features an exciting line-up of nine Group races including the $250,000 Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) for three-year-olds.
The 2010 Inglis Carbine Club Stakes has attracted a small but quality field of eight horses with the Peter Snowden-trained Skilled the red hot favourite to win the opening race at Flemington on Saturday.
The son of Commands is coming off two solid runs including a third place in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and then second in the Gothic Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield.
Drawn in barrier five for Saturday, Skilled is due to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy.
The horse that beat Skilled last-start in the Gothic Stakes, Mr Chard is also backing up in the Carbine Club Stakes.
Drawn well in barrier three, local Al Samer colt Mr Chard could cause another upset on Saturday if there is rain around as the Dean Lawson-trained three-year-old thrives on a soft track.
Other notable runners in the Carbine Club Stakes this year include Bart Cummings’ improving Shamardal colt Goldstone (barrier four), and two Lee Freedman-trained stablemates Ace Acosta (barrier eight) and Kookaburras (barrier two).
The 2010 Carbine Club Stakes will kick off Victoria Derby Day as Flemington Race 1 on Saturday and is proceeded by a bumper day of racing including the headline race, the $1.5 million Victoria Derby (2500m).
