2017 Newmarket Handicap for Rubiton Winner Super Cash

Caulfield’s Andrew Noblet was thrilled with the Rubiton Stakes result on CF Orr Stakes Day confirming plans to target next month’s Newmarket Handicap 2017 with his winning mare Super Cash.

In a small but classy field, the four-year-old daughter of Written Tycoon added top value to her name and record scoring a big upset at Caulfield Racecourse in the $200,000 Group 2 Schweppes Rubiton Stakes (1100m).

Just seven runners went into the short-distance sprint including the 2015 winner and multiple Group 1 champion Chautauqua ($2.60) who was settled back off the pace third last throughout by jockey Dwayne Dunn.

Last year’s Rubiton Stakes winning jockey on Heatherly (2016), Katelyn Mallyon was back for another shot on roughie hope in betting Super Cash ($19).

The mare was racing for the first time since her third behind Lucky Hussler at Sandown last November in the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m).

Super Cash is a first-up flyer coming into the Rubiton with three wins and a third from four previous resuming runs and she added to that stellar record today.

Known to be slow out of the gates, on CF Orr Day she jumped beautifully and moved straight up into second behind the Mark Kavanagh-trained leader Wild Rain.

Wild Rain, who eventually faded to finish an uncharacteristic last, led into the turn from Super Cash who got the gun trail into the race chasing down the pacesetter.

Shane Nichols’ returning Myer Classic winning filly I Am A Star ($10) also put herself into the race late with Craig Williams aboard, the three-year-old getting up on the inside to challenge.

In the closing stages it was all Super Cash down the outside who drew away in an impressive performance to hold off I Am A Star for a length win.

“How lucky to be aboard this mare, she’s flying,” Mallyon gushed post-win.

“Geez she won well.

“She began well and she’s known for missing the start. I was able to just have a beautiful bunny with Wild Rain in front.

“She put them away quickly and when I let her go she felt super.

“So pleased to get the win for Andrew and the whole team from Noblet Racing.”

The Team Hawkes-trained Chautauqua did his best work in the final 100m, working home well to get up for the final placing running through the line in a performance that suggested he could be looking for further at this later stage of his career.

Noblet confirmed Super Cash would now be aimed at just her second elite level success after a 2015 Thousand Guineas seventh, targeting the $1.25 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) down the Flemington straight on March 11.

“A great thrill. She just had no luck in the spring and to come back in the autumn and do that first-up in what looked a really hot race was great,” he said.

“She’ll definitely get a run in the Newmarket now so that’s where’ we’re going to head.”
