Caulfield’s Mick Price will kick off the 2016 Thousand Guineas campaign of two of his promising fillies at Moonee Valley Racecourse in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes on Saturday.
Twenty-eight three-year-old fillies are nominated for this year’s edition of the $120,000 Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m), one of the Black-Type features of Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes Day on the weekend in Melbourne.
The set weights plus penalties sprint is an ideal early lead-up for fillies eyeing a shot at the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) over the mile at Caulfield Racecourse on October 8.
Price has two fillies on that path entered for the Atlantic Jewel Stakes this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival with Oregon’s Day and Inspired Estelle.
The two were put through their paces in an 800m gallop at Moonee Valley on Tuesday morning ahead of their three-year-old debuts, the workout completed in 53.75 seconds including the final 400m in 24.56 seconds.
“I think both will be better on bigger tracks and over 1400 [metres] but the race on Saturday is a Listed race,” Price told Racenet speaking of the pair.
“They will run black type races on their way to the Thousand Guineas – they’re both nice fillies and looking forward to running them.”
A daughter of Manhattan Rain form Estelle Collection, Inspired Estelle is beautifully bred and a three-quarter sister to Price’s five-time Group 1 winning sprinter Lankan Rupee.
She has had one more official start than stablemate Oregon’s Day, breaking her maiden status at her third run at Sandown-Hillside over 1300m by 2.75 lengths in early June.
A winning barrier trial at Pakenham on the Synthetic on August 25 over 1000m followed before her first foray into stakes’ racing on Saturday.
“She’s not Lankan Rupee but her sire will get her up over a mile and will be black type, it’s just a matter of when and where,” Price said.
Oregon’s Day meanwhile has had just the two starts, the daughter of Domesday also a last start winner.
After a second at Terang on debut, she raced at Caulfield on April 30 in the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes (1200m) and caught the eye with a close second just a neck off Highland Beat.
Inspired Estelle pays $51 in the latest all-in Thousand Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, while Oregon’s Day is better fancied at $26 in markets led by the Chris Waller-trained Omei Sword.
Price chases his second Thousand Guineas win having taken out the feature in 2008 with Gallica won came off a lead-up win in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
Waller is also a former Thousand Guineas winning trainer having prepared Amicus for her success in 2014.
His best hope in 2016 Omei Sword won the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes last time out and races again on Saturday in Sydney’s Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.
