Offering a ballot exemption into the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 19, Saturday’s $300,000 Group 2 UNSW Todman Stakes (1200m) features a small but classy field of colts.

Running as the second race on Randwick Guineas Day at 1:00pm (AEDT), the Todman Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au will be dominated by classy Written Tycoon two-year-old Capitalist.

He is current $4.20 second favourite behind Mick Price’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner Extreme Choice ($4) in all-in Golden Slipper Stakes odds and has won all three of his starts to date.

The latest was by two and a half lengths on the Gold Coast in early January in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m), plus he has winning Randwick form thanks to a Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) win on debut last October.

He has trialled once officially since the Magic Millions win when runner-up to smart filly English over 837m at Randwick on February 19 and looks hard to beat in the Todman Stakes from barrier five this weekend.

Capitalist is joined in the Todman Stakes field by stablemate Defcon who is drawn ideally in barrier two as the son of Choisir looks to break his maiden status three runs in.

He has had two starts for two seconds to date firstly to Tessera in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) on a mud Rosehill track in late January and then to Astern in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on February 20.

The two horses that have beaten home Defcon both represent John O’Shea and the Godolphin stable in the Todman Stakes this weekend also with Astern in barrier six and Tessera in gate one with James McDonald and Hugh Bowman to ride respectively.

Medaglia D’Oro colt Astern won at Randwick in December before his half-length Silver Slipper success as the odds-on favourite, while fellow dual winner Tessera has similar form.

Sharing the same sire as Astern, he won over 1100m at Randwick in mid-January before his Group 3 win by one and a half lengths a fortnight later.

Gai Waterhouse has prepared six previous Golden Slipper Stakes winners including three in the past four years and Vancouver (2015) last year, and has one runner in Saturday’s Todman Stakes field.

She will saddle-up Kiss And Make Up in barrier four with Kerrin McEvoy booked to ride the More Than Ready colt again after partnering for a win on debut over 1200m at Canterbury on February 17.

The last of the acceptors is the Paul Messara-trained Weatherly in barrier three with jockey Craig Williams in the saddle, the Beneteau colt coming off a Melbourne win in Flemington’s Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) a fortnight ago from a wide barrier 14 of 15 draw.
