Mossin’ Around Tops 2016 Angus Armanasco Stakes Field & Odds

John Thompson’s super consistent filly Mossin’ Around is early favourite to win her first black-type race in the Angus Armanasco Stakes 2016 at Caulfield Racecourse on Blue Diamond Stakes Day.

Due to jump at 2:12pm (local) as the third race on the Saturday card in Melbourne, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Polytrack Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) has attracted a final field of 13 three-year-old fillies.

The best in Angus Armanasco Stakes betting through Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.50 for the win and drawn a treat in barrier five is Mossman filly Mossin’ Around.

She boasts one win and three seconds from four starts to date, her latest performance a brave second when beaten only a quarter-length by Risque in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) on February 13.

Jockey Mark Zahra retains the ride for this weekend, Mossin’ Around boasting the fitness edge over many of her rivals and the extra metres looking to suit.

She is followed closely in the Angus Armanasco Stakes odds by Pasadena Girl ($5) and market mover Cana backed in from $6 to $5.50.

Jumping first-up from barrier six with Luke Nolen in the saddle is Peter Moody’s returning Group 1 winning daughter of Savabeel Pasadena Girl, best known for Champagne Stakes success over the Randwick mile in April last year.

Her latest three runs in the spring all produced fourth place finishes including behind Stay With Me in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield and the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) in the mud behind Jameka at Flemington.

She has trialled once officially since winning over 800m at Cranbourne on February 8 and is being geared up for a campaign over shorter distanced races this time in.

The Team Hawkes-trained Cana is a nicely-bred Fastnet Rock filly jumping from barrier two on the weekend.

Another Kevin Hayes Stakes graduate having run third in the Caulfield lead-up a fortnight ago, she won her opening two career stats in Sydney.

The Kevin Hayes was her maiden Melbourne run, and she should have taken improvement out of her first start this way of going.

Rounding out the hopes under double figures for the win are Egypt ($6) and Catch A Fire ($7.50) jumping from barriers nine and ten respectively.

Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mark Kavanagh prepares Sebring filly Egypt who lines-up for the ninth time this weekend, her last run a brave second to Don’t Doubt Mamma at Flemington only last weekend in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m).

She was flying late seven days ago and if she handles the quick back-up will be fast to finish again here.

Catch A Fire has Damian Lane in the saddle, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained filly another daughter of Sebring who steps up into black-type company for the first time on the back of a screaming four length win at Moonee Valley over 1200m on February 12.

At juicer odds but still with genuine claims for the upset include New Zealand Group 1 performer Let Her Rip ($11) and the Michael Moroney-trained Alaskan Rose ($11) drawn at opposite ends of the field with gates three and 13 respectively.
