Melbourne Cup Betting 2015: Where the Money’s Gone

The 2015 Melbourne Cup betting tips are coming in thick and fast ahead of Flemington Race 7 at 3:00pm (AEST) this afternoon, but what horses are the punters loading up on in the iconic two mile clash?

Sky Hunter

Sky Hunter is still at a roughies’ price but has been well backed to score an upset 2015 Melbourne Cup result for Godolphin and UK horseman Saeed Bin Suroor.

This year’s edition of the time-honoured $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) features a world class field of 24 stayers including 11 internationals looking to go back-to-back in the ‘race that stops a nation’ after the success of the then German-trained Protectionist 12 months ago.

Japan’s Fame Game leads the latest Melbourne Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, where the more unique bets you place on the race the more chances you get to win a brand new 2015 Ford 4×4 Ranger, at an easing quote of $5.

He has drifted out from as short as $3.80 earlier in the week to become just the second Melbourne Cup favourite since Makybe Diva for her third in 2005 to salute for the punters joining Fiorente (6/1 in 2013).

So with the punters shying away from the top fancy where is the Melbourne Cup money at?

Trip To Paris is the shortest-priced of the Melbourne Cup market movers out to become the third single figure hope in as many years to win the great Flemington staying feature!

2015 Melbourne Cup Market Movers

#8 Max Dynamite ($13 into $11): William Mullins-trained Irish raider with winning form up to 3300m. Took out the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup over that distance last time out, but goes into the race without a previous run down under. Carried 58.5kg to victory last start and gets in here on just 55kg with a nice gate two draw. Well weighted and six-year-olds have a good record with five-from-10 over the past decade.

#10 Trip To Paris ($9 into $7.50): Another 55kg hope prepared by Ed Dunlop who has run second three times in the past four years with Red Cadeaux. Won the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup (4023m) in June and was third in the Group 2 Goodwood Cup (3219m) the next month. Has had a previous run in Australia, which historically is the way to go with raiders, when second in the Caulfield Cup and the extra distance will suit with Tommy Berry retaining the ride.

#12 Sky Hunter ($67 into $34): Surprising surge on this Saeed Bin Suroor-trained Godolphin galloper from the UK, the six-year-old a winner up to 2418m with a last start second back in September at home. Hasn’t seen the 3200m before but saddlecloth #12 is one of the most successful in Melbourne Cup history and drops from 61kg last start to only 54kg with William Buick in the saddle.

#13 The Offer ($41 into $31): One of two in the race for 2013 winning trainer Gai Waterhouse, three-time Melbourne Cup winning hoop Damien Oliver aboard the seven-year-old who won the 2014 Sydney Cup over this distance. Comes off the Bendigo Cup win with 59kg so will relish dropping down to only 54kg today.

#21 Sertorius ($201 into $151): A genuine roughie but this Geelong-trained stayer holds sentimental favouritism for many. Hasn’t won since the Easter Cup over 2000m in April and left lots of room for improvement when ninth to fellow Cup hope Almoonqith in the Geelong Cup last time out. Has had a 3200m run before however when third to The Offer in the Sydney Cup last year so could surprise at juicy odds.

Sertorius is out to become the longest priced Melbourne Cup winner in history with three 100-1 winners over the years in: Pearl (1871), Wotan (1936) and Old Rowley (1940)

Want to follow the Melbourne Cup money trail and back one of the market movers? Head to Ladbrokes.com.au now and place a number of unique bets, such as a Win bet on one horse then a Trifecta with your favourites in the race, to enter the ‘Melbourne Cup Prize Draw’ giving away over $70,000 in prize money!
