Catkins Works Well Ahead of Tattersall’s Tiara

Trainer Chris Waller has revealed he is confident of further Group 1 success at Eagle Farm a week from Saturday, with talented mare Catkins continuing to work well ahead of the season-ending Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 21st.

Removed from the final field of the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm last weekend after an incident in her box the preceding Thursday, Waller said the Dubawi mare has not missed a single session of work since arriving in Brisbane, and the scratching was simply a precautionary measure to ensure peak condition for the Tattersall’s Tiara.

“She just kicked out and knocked her leg. We’ve been able to work her every day and she had a very pleasing piece of work this morning (Wednesday),” Waller told TVN.

“She will gallop again on Saturday, and then again next Tuesday.

“It would have been good to race in the Dane Ripper Stakes for the prizemoney but it shouldn’t affect her going in to the Tatt’s Tiara.”

Arguably the most talented current Australian racehorse yet to break through for a Group 1 victory, Catkins has returned to the track in prime condition this year; winning both the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) and Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) first-up before finishing a fighting third in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) most notably on March 22nd.

Having also confirmed 2013 Tatt’s Tiara champion Red Tracer for a title defence, Waller said he is pleased with the way the mare has come through a strong final straight sprint in last weekend’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), and is expecting another polished performance in June 21st’s feature.

“The way the race was run, she couldn’t do much from where she was positioned,” Waller added.

“I’m very pleased with her; she will be better suited against the mares.”

A standout performer over the 2013 racing calendar, Red Tracer won both the Dane Ripper Stakes and Tattersall’s Tiara over winter before returning in spring in similarly devastating form; working towards an impressive victory in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on November 2nd.

Securing some typically impressive results over five races in 2014 so-far, Red Tracer is more than a chance of defending her maiden Group 1 title in the 2014 Tattersall’s Tiara in just over a week.
