Tinto Eyes Gold in Queensland Oaks 2014

Rex Lipp’s Toowoomba-trained filly Tinto is looking to atone for her luckless last start second and turn the tables on hot favourite Arabian Gold in Saturday’s 2014 Queensland Oaks.

On May 17 at Doomben Red Dazzler filly Tinto suffered a bump by the David Vandyke-trained Arabian Gold during the running of the Group 2 The Roses (2000m).

In the end Dubawi grey Arabian Gold sprinted off for a one and a quarter length victory over Tinto as the pair quinelled the traditional lead-up to the $400,000 Group 1 Treasury Casino & Hotel Queensland Oaks (2400m).

The Roses was Sydney filly Arabian Gold’s third straight Group victory following two Group 3 victories at Randwick in April.

Her tidy form, The Roses win and then drawing barrier one for the Oaks on the weekend at Eagle Farm have seen Arabian Gold sit top of the markets now at $2.50.

She had an early week scare twisting a shoe pre-track work in Brisbane on Tuesday but it didn’t turn into anything serious and has been well backed since Vandyke confirmed she’d come through the incident injury free.

While Arabian Gold had Tinto’s measure in The Roses, jockey Tim Bell on the runner-up said his filly was very unlucky in the run and that he couldn’t wait to get revenge in the Group 1.

Tinto has also drawn nicely for her Oaks bid too though set to start from barrier six, Bell hoping they get a clearer run stepping up to 2400m as the $7.50 second favourite.

The increased distance is something Tinto’s trainer Lipp has a few queries about, but Vandyke has those same questions about his favourite so it seems even ground in that regard.

“I’ve very happy with her and she’s trained on since Doomben which is the main thing,” Lipp said.

“It was a very nice run in the Roses after she was bumped by the winner.

“Of course the question now is the 2400 metres. You don’t know until you try them but I’m confident she’ll see it out okay.

“We just hope for a bit of luck and we’ll see what happens.”

It’s a race Lipp has had earmarked for his filly for some time, and he’s hoping the decision to go to the 2400m in the Group 1 and not target the $350,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) instead pays off.

“When we sat down at the beginning of this prep we decided we would go one way, or the other with her,” Lipp told The Chronicle.

“It was going to be the Oaks or the Guineas.

“We pushed on to the Oaks and here we are.”

If successful in the Oaks Tinto will be handing connections at Cambooya’s Eureka Stud their second Group 1 victory of the winter following on from the Tony Gollan-trained Spirit Of Boom in the Doomben 10,000.

The only other filly under $10 in the latest Queensland Oaks odds is then $8 third pick Khutulun for Caulfield trainer Luke Oliver who Ben Melham rates despite their wide barrier draw.
