Kiwi Historian Heads Lord Mayor’s Cup 2014 Field

Gary Alton’s New Zealand-trained stayer Historian is one of 13 gallopers set to face off in the opening Group race of Doomben 10,000 Day, the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Cup to run as Doomben Race 4 at 1:20pm this Saturday.

Leading the field for this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Programmed Property Services Lord Mayor’s Cup (1615m) with the number one saddlecloth is Choisir six-year-old Historian racing down under for the first time.

Winner of the Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) back on Boxing Day, their second elite level victory, they resumed over the same distance at Te Rapa in February but finished dead last in the Group 1 Herbie Dyke Stakes.

Historian was found to be lame post-race but returned just 28 days later for a nice second behind subsequent Ranvet Stakes – The BMW winner during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival Silent Achiever in the Group 1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m).

In their latest race they were fifth in the Group 2 Awapuni Gold Cup (2000m), an effort they’re looking to improve on when back over the mile for their down under debut.

There is just one last start winner in this year’s Lord Mayor’s Cup field meanwhile with the John O’Shea-trained Cameo.

Set to get the rails run from barrier one with Glen Boss aboard, the Darley-owned Shamardal mare raced over this distance last Friday to win the Listed Scone Cup by a length.

They go up from 54kg that run, where they also drew the inside alley, to 57kg under the weight-for-age conditions of the Lord Mayor’s Cup however so will need to handle that.

Also coming via a Scone Cup run is the Grant Allard-trained third placegetter Loaded who has drawn at the opposite end of the field for the rematch with barrier 13 on Saturday.

The in-form Flying Nicko six-year-old, winner of the Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m) at this track and distance back in July last year, also ran second to Kaypers at Randwick two back so has the right lead-up to feature.

O’Shea meanwhile will be dually represented in the race having also accepted for another four-year-old mare, Wistful.

The daughter of Tiger Hill was runner-up to Destiny’s Kiss at Warwick Farm on Anzac Day before their second behind Leebaz in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) on May 3.

Leebaz trumped the Hawkesbury Cup form last weekend with their brave second behind Streama in the Group 1 BTC Cup (2000m) so O’Shea will be hoping for big things from Wistful this start.

Also coming off a good lead-up run is Lloyd Kennewell’s Adelaide raider Starkiato.

The Starcraft five-year-old raced at home at Morphettville on May 10 and finished second, albeit beaten three and a half lengths, behind Rhythm To Spare in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m).

Winner of the Gawler Cup last September, Starkiato should improve on that on firmer ground this Saturday.

Other notable hopes then include Gerald Ryan’s Doomben Cup eighth placed mare Angel Of Mercy, another New Zealander Roll Out The Carpet having just their second run down under and the Barry Mitchell-trained Zabeel seven-year-old Brayroan.
