Top Sydney hoop Tommy Berry is looking forward to this afternoon’s 2013 Hawkesbury Gold Cup believing his mount Kinnersley a good chance in the handicap clash.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Al Maher seven-year-old is one of 10 gallopers engaged in this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Panthers Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m), and is also the narrow favourite to win.

In a tight Hawkesbury Gold Cup betting market four horses are at $5 or under including the veteran Kinnersley at a quote of around $4.20.

Winner of the Goulburn Cup over the mile and the Magic Millions Stayers Cup over 1800m on the Gold Cost back in January, Kinnersley has what it takes to add another country cup win to their title today according to Berry.

“If he is going to win at this level again this race looks ideal,” Berry told the Monash Weekly.

“In the Goulburn Cup and Magic Millions he was able to sit off a good speed and this race looks pretty similar.

“He is as fit as he has ever been and will run a great race.”

Berry rode them for both of those victories last season and was also aboard for their most recent run.

After two disappointing efforts at Rosehill on rain affected tracks in July when ridden by two separate hoops, Berry reunited with Kinnersley on August 3 in the Listed Winter Challenger (1500m).

There Berry rode the old galloper positively from the gates and after going forward to cross the field, the pair hung on for a credible third beaten under half a length by the Chris Waller-trained winner Coup Ay Tee.

They face the Winter Challenge winner Coup Ay Tee again today at Hawkesbury in the Gold Cup which has also attracted the likes of the Paul Messara-trained eight-year-old Mic Mac, Kinnersley’s imported stablemate Julienas and the in-form Loaded after their fourth straight win from the inside alley.
