Curtana Not One of Hay List’s 10,000 Rivals

Premier Victorian trainer Peter Moody chose not to set his smart filly Curtana up against the mighty Hay List this Saturday in a bid to secure her spot in the Stradbroke Handicap when final acceptances for the Doomben 10,000 were taken this morning.

Hay List

Hay List is set to start the shortest-priced Doomben 10,000 favourite in recent history

Raging favourite Hay List will face eight quality rivals in the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m), but Exceed And Excel filly Curtana will not be one of them.

Having won her past three starts, Curtana is heading towards a run in Queensland’s richest sprint, the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11.

Still well down the Stradbroke order of entry in 44th, Curtana needs to win another race to make the field and Moody has decided she will bypass the 10,000 and instead clash with Stradbroke favourite Sincero next week.

Owner-breeder David Moodie said on Tuesday he did not fancy pitting Curtana up against Hay List and was instead looking at securing a ballot exemption into the Stradbroke via Saturday week’s Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm.

“She probably can’t beat Hay List at weight-for-age so we might wait another week for the ballot-free QTC Cup as that looks her best chance of making it,” Moodie said.

“She’s there to run in the Stradbroke but as the moment she’s in a hopeless position of gaining a run as, in the Stradbroke, she is treated like a clot and doesn’t get the two kilograms allowance that would have seen her make the field.

“Of course, waiting another week means she would have to back-up (into the Stradbroke) so neither scenario is ideal.”

Before the Doomben 10,000 final field was announced, Hay List was odds-on in the market at $1.50.

This price is set to firm when new odds are released, John McNair’s dual Group 1 winning five-year-old having drawn ideally in barrier two and reuniting with regular rider Glyn Schofield on Saturday.

Other top fancies in Doomben 10,000 betting include the Peter Snowden-trained Beaded, Love Conquers All and Buffering.

With Corey Brown booked for the ride, Lonhro mare Beaded has drawn awkwardly with gate seven and will have her first start since finishing a close second to Response in Adelaide’s Group 1 Sportingbet Classic (1200m) on March 26.

Smart Mossman four-year-old Love Conquers All is also resuming, the Hawkes-trained galloper first-up since his two game seconds at elite level when runner-up to Rangirangdoo in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on April 2 and most recently to Sacred Choice in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 16.

Love Conquers All drew mid-field with barrier five for the Doomben 10,000 and is due to be ridden by Chris Munce.

Leading the local contingent is the Robert Heathcote-trained Buffering who suffered a blow drawing the far outside gate eight.

Rounding out the field are Tracey Bartley’s seven-year-old Sniper’s Bullet (barrier nine), dual Stradbroke Handicap winner Black Piranha (barrier four), the Grahame Begg-trained veteran All Silent (barrier six), Sue Grill’s Toowoomba galloper Border Rebel (barrier one) and classy Shamardal mare No Evidence Needed (barrier three).
