2022 Caulfield Guineas Odds Update: Tijuana Into Single Figures

The nicely-bred American Pharoah colt is one of a capacity field of three-year-olds facing off in this year’s Group 1 $3 million Neds Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Donning the number one saddlecloth, the progressive youngster has jockey Mark Zahra retaining the ride from barrier 10.

Zahra is after his second Caulfield Guineas winning ride following his 2019 success aboard Super Seth.

The hoop has been aboard Tijuana for two of the galloper’s five career starts and two of his three wins having ridden him to victory in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) back in April and the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at The Valley last start.

Whobegotyou (2008) was the last horse to complete the Stutt Stakes – Caulfield Guineas double.

After opening at a quote of $11, Tijuana has subsequently firmed notably in Caulfield Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au into $8.

He is the sole horse in this year’s race proven at a mile having won from an on-pace run in the Stutt Stakes and should be strong to the line again here.

Sitting firm at the top of the Caulfield Guineas odds is the James Cummings-trained Golden Mile at $2.90 after drawing well with barrier five.

The Godolphin-raced Astern colt is a beautiful looking horse and racing up to both his pedigree and stature so far.

Two back he was the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) by over three lengths before a fourth to the now The Everest-bound Jacquinot in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m).

He returns to Melbourne on the weekend for the first time since a winning debut at Ballarat back in April and still needs to prove himself at 1600m, but the Golden Rose form is looking pretty rock solid.

The other horse at the top of the markets getting plenty of early love from the punters is the Dan O’Sullivan-trained Berkeley Square who has been backed in from $5.50 to $4.60.

The Territories gelding has Craig Williams in the saddle again after the pair won back-to-back 1400m races at Flemington leading up to the Guineas.

Last time out Berkeley Square was good in the Listed Exford Plate (1400m) posting a narrow victory, the form of which was subsequently franked with the third-placed Tijuana winning the Stutt.

He chases a hat-trick in Saturday’s tougher assignment, is well rested and gets a gun run from the gate.

Most of the other runners in the Caulfield Guineas are drifting out in the markets with the exception of the Chris Waller-trained Pierro colt Osipenko ($26 into $20) coming off a first-up seventh in the Prelude, Peter Moody’s son of Zoustar Millane ($26 into $21) who ran eighth in the Golden Rose and Stutt Stakes second-placed Maurice colt Foujita San ($34 into $26) with the outside alley.
